Broncos duo cleared for Vegas after being fined by NRL for scuffle

Broncos captain Adam Reynolds and star forward Pat Carrigan will be free to play in the club’s season opener in Las Vegas after being fined for a late-night scuffle in Fortitude Valley.

Reynolds and Carrigan were served NRL breach notices for the wrestle caught on camera on Sunday night, prompting an investigation by the NRL Integrity Unit.

The NRL will not publicise its proposed sanctions for the pair under the terms of the new collective bargaining agreement.

However sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to the confidential nature of the breach notices, have confirmed that a suspension has not been proposed by the governing body.

Instead, fines of $5000 to $10,000 each have been proposed.

“Both players are alleged to have engaged in a physical altercation in public which has brought the game into disrepute,” an NRL statement read.

Reynolds and Carrigan have five business days to respond. They are expected to accept the punishments given they apologised this week for their roles in the incident.

Broncos coach Kevin Walters has already indicated the club would not stand either player down before Brisbane’s opening game against the Roosters at Allegiant Stadium.

Brisbane fly to their base camp in Los Angeles early next week before the historic double-header on March 3 (Australian time).

Teammates Corey Oates, Payne Haas and Reece Walsh, who were filmed nearby as Reynolds and Carrigan wrestled, are not facing sanctions for their part in trying to stop the scuffle.

Reynolds had been attempting to put Carrigan into a taxi when tensions flared on Sunday night. He apologised when he fronted the media on Tuesday.

“We’re embarrassed and take full ownership of what happened,” Reynolds said.

“We’re a really tight group, we understand it’s not a good look. We were there as mates, it started out as a playful fight, there was a bit of wrestle, it got a bit heated, but nobody was injured ... we understand it’s not a good look, and we take ownership of it.”
