English trained blueblood Snow Sky was the horse classified as the last to finish in the Melbourne Cup, the Sir Michael Stoute-trained galloper fading badly when beaten in the last 400 metres to cross the line in 23rd position.

He was classified as the final finisher because the grand old warrior, Red Cadeaux, did not complete the course.

Ed Dunlop's hugely popular nine-year-old, who had finished runner up in the great race on three previous occasions, was injured during the contest and was eased down over the line by jockey Gerald Mosse.

The veteran was taken to Werribee where he will be examined by veterinary surgeons to gauge his health. He had been given pain killers and officials said he would be closely monitored throughout the afternoon.

Snow Sky was the top weight in the race and had been prominent throughout before losing ground as the pressure came on in the drive to the line.
