Stoinis faces make-or-break World Cup training session
Birmingham: Marcus Stoinis faces a make-or-break training session on Tuesday night (AEST) in a bid to prove he should remain a part of Australia's World Cup campaign.
Stoinis has a side strain – on the right side, not the left as he had earlier in the tournament – and was at training at Edgbaston on Monday.
He took part in throwing drills and had a massage but wasn't seen in the nets. However, he still has another day to prove why he should remain, with Australia to make a decision by Wednesday evening – 24 hours before the semi-final showdown against England.
He will need to prove he can bat and bowl to retain his spot.
Stoinis hurt himself while fielding against South Africa in Manchester. He bowled only three overs and later batted in discomfort.
He had been nursing a left side strain since missing two matches earlier in the tournament.
Teammate Peter Handscomb and bowling coach Adam Griffith said Stoinis was doing all he could to remain in the 15-man squad.
"His mood is fine. He is an up about character. Always ready for a laugh and having a joke," Handscomb said.
"Obviously, he is doing everything he can to get ready. It's basically in his court, we just have to wait and see really. If there is anyone that can pull through this, it's the big fella."
Griffith said Stoinis faced a pivotal session on Tuesday.
"We'll look at him. (Tuesday) be his main session and we'll see how he pulls up," he said.
"He's fitted into that allrounder's role and filled some gaps for us, so we'd have to look at what the team make up would be from there, how we'd get our overs in, in particular. But we try not to look too far ahead yet because we want to have a look at him and see how he's going."
Australia have yet to lodge paperwork confirming replacements for Stoinis and Usman Khawaja (hamstring).
All-rounder Mitch Marsh and Matthew Wade took part in training on Monday. Wade appears likely to come in for Khawaja but there is a growing mystery about the make-up of the squad.
