Day One Recap ... Deja vu all over again

Upper hand: Not necessarily by a heap, but you'd have to say Australia, particularly given its perilous position at 5/97 before the now-customary middle-order revival from Brad Haddin and Steve Smith. It's hard to now just how good a score 326 will prove, but there appears plenty of movement for bowlers through the air and off the track, with the odd one already keeping low. Losing a wicket before the close was of course the last thing the visitors could afford, with England managing more than 300 just twice in eight completed innings this series.

STUMPS: England 1/8 (Cook 7 not out, Anderson 1 not out)

Cook survives a couple of brutish deliveries, takes a single, leaving Anderson the last couple of balls. He handles them OK, and that's stumps, folks, England in early trouble again at 1/8. Hang around for our post-play summary, coming soon.

Edge! Just short of slips from Anderson to the bowling of Harris, and we're going to have one last over from Johnson. Is there more drama to come?!

WICKET! Mitch strikes, Carberry flicks him off his hip, but to the right of Lyon at leg slip, who dives to his right and takes a ripper just above the ground! Just as well, too, because the ball before saw Carberry get the thinnest of edges according to Hotspot, but there was no appeal! Great start for Australia, England 1/6, and it's a night watchman, Jimmy Anderson.

That was an ominous looking first over from Johnson, a maiden. Now it's Harris to Cook, who works him away for a single, and England's up to 0/5 with Harris coming around the wicket to Carberry, a tactic which has worked well against him. Just the one run off the over, Johnson again to come steaming in to Cook.

Is that out?! Johnson's first ball to Carberry goes through to Haddin, makes a noise and up they go! Given not out, and they decide not to refer it. Was that a mistake, though? Replay might be suggesting it took a little inside edge on to his back leg. Hmmm ... tough one, might not have been overturned anyway. And already Johnson's working up a full head of steam, Carberry pulls the bat inside the line a couple of times.

And here we go! Four slips and a gully for Harris, Cook steers the first away safely. Lets the second one go, plays the third out to short mid-off. And there's four! Rare full-toss from Harris, and Cook puts him away through covers. Last couple uneventful, and it's 0/4 after one over.

Very tricky little spell for England coming up here, probably five overs at best, but Australia will be throwing the kitchen sink at them while it lasts. It's going to be Alastair Cook on strike with Ryan Harris to open proceedings with the ball.

AUSTRALIA ALL OUT 326 (Smith 115, Haddin 75, Stokes 6/99)

WICKET! And the innings wraps up, Smith holes out to Root at mid-on, and Stokes gets his sixth wicket! Huge ovation for Smith, though, helped stabilise an innings that was looking very dodgy at 5/97. Stokes finishes with 6/99 from just short of 20 overs.
