England cops a battering on social media after loss to Bangladesh

In the third ball of the 48th over, Bangladeshi paceman Rubel Hossain speared a delivery at English tailender James Anderson.

As Anderson squared up, the odds were against him. His proud cricketing nation needed 15 runs with one wicket to spare to have a chance at securing passage to the World Cup quarter-finals.

Anderson looked to force it to the on-side, but missed and the white Kookaburra slammed into his off stump - and England's World Cup campaign.

Before the bails had fallen to the dry Adelaide turf, the internet had already reacted - swiftly, brutally and creatively.

Bangladesh had triumphed over England and the fun was just beginning.

For so long the underdog, Ireland could finally lay claim to the best performing team in Europe
