Hazlewood, Marsh dominate India in T20 at a heaving MCG

By

A lethal spell from Josh Hazlewood has propelled Australia to an emphatic four-wicket Twenty20 win over India in front of 82,438 fans at the MCG.

After the opening game of the five-match series in Canberra was washed out on Wednesday night, Australia went 1-0 up with a commanding performance.

With the huge crowd in Melbourne made up predominantly of Indian fans, Hazlewood silenced them from the beginning after captain Mitch Marsh won another toss and elected to bowl first.

After dismissing India for 125 off 18.4 overs, Marsh (46) and fellow opener Travis Head (28) went about trying to end the match as quickly as possible, with Australia chasing down India’s disappointing target with a whopping 40 balls to spare, racing to 6-126 off 13.2 overs.

Marsh, who has been in scintillating white-ball form, smashed one of the biggest ever sixes at the MCG when he blasted Harshit Rana into the second level of the Olympic Stand.

After whacking four sixes, Marsh went for one big shot too many and was caught at long off with Australia 39 runs away from victory.

Australia lost 4-39 after Marsh’s dismissal, which included Jasprit Bumrah being on a hat-trick at one stage, but were never in any danger of losing the match.

Hazlewood never relented after seemingly taking a wicket with the first ball of the match, which was then overturned on review, to finish with figures of 3-13.

Opener Abhishek Sharma batted superbly, playing a lone hand to save India from embarrassment with 68 from 37 balls.

Sharma didn’t manage to find enough of the strike, however, for India to truly capitalise on his class.

Allrounder Harshit Rana (35 from 33 balls), who came to the crease in the eighth over at No.7, only faced four less deliveries than Sharma.

Hazlewood’s night could have been better, with wicketkeeper Josh Inglis dropping a catch and Shubman Gill successfully challenging an lbw dismissal.

The pro-Indian crowd were jubilant early as Sharma was able to take Xavier Bartlett for 17 from the second over.

But Hazlewood’s lethal line and length shocked India, reducing the tourists to 4-32 from five overs.

The 34-year-old’s second over ended with two wickets and just one run.

When allrounder Axar Patel was run out in sloppy circumstances to slump to 5-49, India’s hopes of building a competitive total were all but shot.

Bartlett (2-39) recovered from a challenging start, dismissing Rana and Shivam Dube.

But Sharma was again able to get hold of the Queenslander, with 17 runs coming off his fourth and final over.

Nathan Ellis also bowled well, finishing with figures of 2-21.

A tribute for teenage cricketer Ben Austin, who tragically died after being struck by a ball while batting in the nets on Tuesday afternoon in Ferntree Gully in Melbourne’s outer east, took place before the game. Both teams and officials observed a minute’s silence for Ben.

The MCG turns silent for Ben

By

The MCG crowd went silent in tribute to Ferntree Gully teenager Ben Austin, who tragically died after an accident while training in the cricket nets on Tuesday.

Players from both sides, umpires and representatives from Ferntree Gully, Mulgrave and Eildon Park cricket clubs all stood on the MCG to honour the teenage cricketer.

It’s a tragedy that resonates around the cricket world as players from all over can put themselves in the place of his parents and loved ones.

The silence was absolute. Fitting for the young man.

Both teams are wearing black armbands in his honour.

Hazlewood dominates, then exits as Aussies win at MCG

By Roy Ward

Josh Hazlewood dominated tonight’s game at the MCG finishing with 3-13 from four overs, and now he’ll head home to Sydney to prepare for the blockbuster Ashes series against England.

Hazlewood is in superb form and he will rest at home for a few days before turning out for NSW against Victoria, followed by a trip to Perth for the first Test against England.

Hazlewood’s bowling set the stage for Australia to dismiss India for 125, and then Mitch Marsh’s 46 from 28 balls powered the chase that saw Australia home at 6-126 inside 14 overs.

“The ball feels like it is coming out pretty nicely in whatever format I’m playing at the moment,” Hazlewood told Fox Cricket in the post-game.

Australia have scored a four-wicket win over India at the MCG in front of 82,438 fans.

Both sides and the fans honoured the memory of Ferntree Gully teenager Ben Austin during a moving pre-game minute of silence following Austin’s death after a training accident this week.

Jasprit Bumrah gave the Aussies a late scare, taking two wickets in two balls, but the home side was able to see him off and take the win.

Australia finished on 6-126 inside 14 overs.

Bartlett defends the hat-trick ball calmly

The chants of “Bumrah, Bumrah” rang out, but Xavier Bartlett defended the hat-trick ball with relative ease.

Australia need just two more runs to win.

WICKET: Bumrah is on a hat-trick

By

Bumrah bowled Matt Short a cracking yorker first ball and it smashed into the base of middle stump.

Bumrah is on a hat-trick now. He does love bowling at the MCG, and Australia still need two more runs to win. They can’t score if Bumrah keeps hitting the poles.

WICKET: Bumrah gets Owen

Mitch Owen was caught behind with Australia two runs short of victory after a fizzing ball from Bumrah.

The game goes on.

WICKET: Inglis is out

By

Inglis played some crafty sweep shots to Kuldeep to open the over, but the Indian star is a canny spinner and he has battled back with lbw shouts twice in the over.

Both saw not-out decisions given, but the Indians just went for a review of the second one and the ball was found to be hitting leg stump.

Inglis is out for 20 off 20 and Australia are 4-112 from 11.3 overs, with Marcus Stoinis striding to the crease.

Warner talks up Marsh recall, Crowd announced as 82,438

By Roy Ward

The debate over whether Mitch Marsh could be recalled to the Test team will continue after tonight’s innings and David Warner sounds like he is all for it.

Even if Marsh has made it clear he doesn’t expect to be recalled and has tickets for the Ashes.

“I’ll be six beers deep by lunch on day one,” Marsh joked to ABC earlier this month.

But Warner was happy to stir the pot for his old teammate tonight.

WICKET: Varun beats David

By

Tim David took a step back from his crease after being distracted by something – this happened just as Varma was moved to bat-pad.

Then Varun did the same, holding the ball instead of bowling the next delivery.

It did nothing for either player but made for some fun theatre.

Then Varun tricked David into chipping up a defensive shot that sailed into his hands.

David is out caught-and-bowled. Australia need to regain some ascendancy here.

Australia are 3-90 from 8.4 overs.
