Fantastic cricket. Joe Root the constant with a deserved century, his first against Australia since 2015. Nathan Lyon the day-one strike bowler and brilliant back and forth between the two sides with tactics and temperament under the microscope, as they should be.

Personal favourite today was Jonny Bairstow – heaven help a bowler at the other end when he’s in the mood, Harry Brook too. England with the spoils of the day thanks to a thrilling final session where it was basically a run every ball. Best bit is we do it all again tomorrow and for all England’s pyrotechnics, Australia will fancy their chances of cashing in on this pitch. Until then, you can read Malcolm Conn’s match report here.

Stumps: Australia survive England’s late assault
By
Last over of the day from Robinson and it’s safely negotiated by David Warner and Usman Khawaja. Some nervy moments, not least with their running between the wickets, but they’ve done well to keep the English speedsters out. Khawaja stalling to ensure England don’t get one extra over in.
Six overs lost for the day - over-rate’s not been fantastic again. But that’s the only downfall on a superb day’s cricket. 407 runs for the day - wouldn’t you know it, the exact same day one tally that we saw at this very ground in 2005.
Australia 0-14 (Warner 8*, Khawaja 4*) trail by 379 runs

Poll: Will England’s declaration pay off?
By
No Jimmy Anderson with the new ball, it’s Ollie Robinson instead to Khawaja. And those first two balls, Usman looks anything but confident. Caught on the crease and probing at balls he doesn’t need to.
Better from the next few balls, punches a two down the ground. Warner faces up to Broad the next over and again crunches a boundary through the off-side, this time a bit squarer.

Warner v Broad as Australia begin
By
And we’ve got play once more. David Warner and Usman Khawaja facing up to Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson.
Broad with the first ball and Warner taking first guard. Fourteen times the former has dismissed the latter in Test cricket.
Broad v Warner once moreAP
Three slips and a catching man at a shortish point. Warner with bat on ball to the first one, he wanted a quick single but Khawaja turned him back. No-ball from the second ball.
Warner desperate to get off the mark and pushing for a single at every chance. Some nervous running as Khawaja is sent sprawling back to his crease at the non-striker’s end.
And then bang. A boundary to finish the over. Warner thumps a full ball outside off.
Australia 0-5 (Warner 4*, Khawaja 0*) trail by 388 runs

Declaration: England call time after Root explodes
By
The foot is down. Repeat, the foot is down.
Joe Root has triple figures, and now he’s going after Nathan Lyon. A slog sweep for six to start the over, then belting him down the ground for a brutal six to finish. An insulting little reverse sweep from Robinson in there too (Okay, it was actually lovely, but that’s rough).
Twenty from the over and Ben Stokes decides that’s enough. Calls them in with 393 runs on the board and Joe Root unbeaten. They’ll get an extra 30 minutes at Australia with the ball.
And just quietly, do you think David Warner wants to face Stuart Broad like this?
England 8 declared for 393 (Root 118*, Robinson 17*)
Ollie Robinson putting up a fair fight with 20-odd balls mostly blocked out. Joe Root inching closer to a well-deserved hundred on the first day of the series.
A pair of singles takes Root to 96 before Robinson pinches two from a Cameron Green no-ball, and then four - the cheekiest of late cuts from right off the stumps. Green follows up with a good bouncer.

Root now, within sight of three figures, cuts Nathan Lyon away for two. Then takes a single past square leg to hit 99. Thought about taking on the man in the deep, thought better of it. Another single for Robinson and Root follows in kind tucking a ball behind square.
There’s his hundred, the 30th of his career. Well played.
England 8-371 (Root 102*, Robinson 11*)

Wicket: Green knocks over Broad
By
Stuart Broad’s vigil comes to a close. Never looked comfortable and waiting on a short ball from West Australian Cam Green.
Green instead pitched up and Broad threw everything he had at a 138 km/hr ball. Duly crashes into the off stump. Deserved a wicket, has been a bit loose at times Green but he’s also thrown in some proper jaffers too.
England 8-350 (Root 93*, Broad 16)

Six: Root reverse-scoops Cummins all the way
By
Joe Root. Stop it. It’s one thing to do it to Scott Boland, another to do it to Pat Cummins.
For the second time in what is actually the slowest innings of any Englishman today (aside from Ben Stokes’ one from eight balls), Root oh-so nonchalantly scoops a good length ball from Cummins - 138 km/hr - straight over the third man boundary.
And just as Moeen’s stay was entertaining, so too his dismissal. Comically so. He’s stumped by several metres after heaving wildly at Nathan Lyon once again. Fun stuff, but that was an ugly exit.
That’s Alex Carey’s fifth dismissal for the innings from seven. The record for an Australian keeper is six in an innings. Meantime, big LBW appeal against Stuart Broad. Steve Smith leading it and convinced it was pad before bat. It wasn’t and Cummins did well to ignore his vice-captain then. Review retained.
