Side by side forever: Collingwood’s never-say-die spirit claims another opponent

By Steve Barrett

They’ve done it again. Ladder-leading, premiership favourites Collingwood showcased their famed, never-say-die resolve once again, with Steele Sidebottom’s behind with 21 seconds remaining pinching a pulsating one-point miracle against Adelaide.

Five days after sensationally overturning a 28-point deficit against Essendon on Anzac Day, the Magpies, in perhaps even more incredible fashion, completed another stunning rearguard fightback.

When Adelaide’s Chayce Jones slotted his second goal in a row early in the fourth term, Collingwood’s deficit was out to 22 points and, on the back of a five-day break, the match was as good as over.

But Craig McRae’s charges simply do not know how to concede defeat. Ash Johnson’s goal got the ball rolling, the brilliant Josh Daicos followed with another, and a full-blooded comeback was on.

Hawkins bags career-best eight goals as Cats down Bombers

By Peter Ryan

Vintage performances from Tom Hawkins and Patrick Dangerfield have propelled Geelong to their fourth consecutive victory over a slow-starting Essendon in the highest scoring game of the season.

Hawkins was brilliant with four goals in the first quarter as the Cats kicked the first six goals of the game. He finished with eight goals to take his career tally to 754.

Matched up on improved defender Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, he was too strong for the Bomber, who looked like Laurel next to Hardy when caught in a battle with the veteran Cat. Hawkins kicked six goals in the first half before the move was made with Jordan Ridley taking over.

Equally impressive was the Cats’ skipper Dangerfield, who was too big for the Bombers’ midfielders, his breakaway speed allowing him win centre clearances. Dangerfield finished up launching the ball inside 50 on 15 occasions.

After trailing the whole game, a behind in the last minute put them up to win the game.

Craig McRae could not have looked happier as he pumped his fists on the boundary.

The Pies were in front for 20 seconds of the game. The last 20 seconds.

Murphy comes off following head knock

By

He seemed to be hit high in a marking contest.

Notably, he returned this round after missing the Anzac Day clash due to concussion.

Josh Daicos gets one

By

Josh Daicos picked the ball off the ground and got a goal on the run.

Adelaide are looking like they are trying to hold on to their lead against an energised Collingwood, rather than play more offensively.

The Crows are up by 9-points, but two goals could change all that.
