The key moments from a big weekend of footy

By Hannah Kennelly

There were plenty of big moments across round four. Here are some you might have missed – or that you might want to see again.

Magic Molloy slots a goal of the year contender

When the AFLW awards committee gathers near the end of the season to select the league’s goal of the year, Chloe Molloy will be a worthy contender.

The ball was kicked deep into the Swans’ forward pocket and was threatening to run out of bounds near the point post, where Molloy bumped an opponent out of the contest. After steadying herself, she soccered it past three Fremantle defenders and one jubilant teammate, who watched it trickle over the goal line without touching either goal post.

‘Unbeatable’ North Melbourne notch 16th consecutive victory

It’s been 644 days since North Melbourne last lost a game and it doesn’t look like their winning streak is coming to an end anytime soon.

North’s winning streak continued on Sunday afternoon at Arden Oval with a 45-point win over Collingwood, marking the team’s 16th consecutive victory. It was also North’s first game without star skipper Jasmine Garner, who is currently recovering from an ankle injury.

Collingwood coach Sam Wright described North’s dominance succinctly in a post-match press conference.

“At the moment they [North] are unbeatable, aren’t they?” he said.

Riggs’ ripping goal powers the Eagles to another win

Eagles debutant Charlotte Riggs produced an excellent performance on Sunday, powering the Eagles to a 19-point win over Port Adelaide in breezy conditions.

The rookie handballed to her teammate Kayla Dalgleish and sprinted forward to collect the ball again, racing towards the inside 50 to boot the ball on the run – her first AFLW goal. The young gun scored another goal in the opening minutes of the final quarter, to help the Eagles win 10.4 (64) to 7.3 (45).

Lions make it seven straight over Crows

When is a hoodoo a hoodoo? When you’ve won seven games straight against your opponent, surely.

With less than 90 seconds on the clock, a free kick in front of goal put the Lions back in front against Adelaide, and they held on to get the four points. Watch the match-winner below.

And then there were two

After round three, four teams remained winless on the bottom of the ladder. Gold Coast’s win over GWS helped them off the bottom and consigned the Giants to another round without a win. Meanwhile, Geelong brought the Bombers’ winning streak to a halt and kicked off their own with their first victory of the season.

They’re not alone, given GWS’ plight, but that still leaves last year’s finalists, Richmond, winless. Melbourne easily accounted for the Tigers on Saturday with a 37-point win. Next up for Richmond are the Cats, while GWS will host the Bulldogs in Canberra as they attempt to break their own duck.

And lastly, file this under heartwarming moments from the round. Job satisfaction is at an all-time high for Blues youngster Sophie McKay.

Life’s a breeze as Daisy’s Eagles down Port

By

Daisy Pearce has West Coast on track for a maiden AFLW finals berth after the Eagles came from behind for the second week in a row to post a 19-point win over Port Adelaide in breezy conditions.

The Power kicked the opening three goals of Sunday’s match to lead 19-0, and they still had a 38-21 edge early in the third quarter when Gemma Houghton kicked a smart goal.

West Coast produced a five-goal final term to beat St Kilda last week, and the Eagles kicked seven of the last eight goals against Port - including five in the final quarter – to post the 10.4 (64) to 7.3 (45) win.

Isabella Lewis kicked two goals in the final-quarter blitz to go with her 22 disposals for the match, while Charlotte Riggs (two goals), Courtney Rowley (26 disposals, seven clearances) and Ella Roberts (24 disposals, five clearances) were also crucial.

North Melbourne haven’t lost a game since 2023. Can anyone in the league stop them?

By Hannah Kennelly

Six-hundred and forty-four days.

That’s how long it’s been since the formidable North Melbourne lost an AFLW game. The dominant Roos fell to the Brisbane Lions in the 2023 AFLW grand final, and since then – including a round two draw with Geelong last year – haven’t lost a single game.

Prespakis stars over Bombers as Geelong end losing streak

By

Geelong have snapped Essendon’s three-game winning streak and ended their own agonising wait for their first victory of the AFLW season with a 31-point win.

Winless across the opening three rounds, the Cats dominated from the outset at Windy Hill and never gave up the lead on the way to an 8.10 (58) to 4.3 (27) victory in blustery conditions.

Georgie Prespakis stole the show with two goals, 33 disposals and seven clearances to also claim family bragging rights over older sister and Essendon star Maddy.

The younger Prespakis put an exclamation mark on the win with an after-the-siren goal.

Star defender Claudia Gunjaca was a late out with a toe injury, but her absence mattered little as Mikayla Bowen combined well with Prespakis with 24 touches.

Flashy Fish stars as Swans sail past Dockers

By

Zippy Fish has played a starring role as Sydney fought off a spirited challenge from Fremantle to win by 25 points and stay undefeated in the AFLW season.

Flashy halfback Fish kicked her career-first goal as the Swans made it four wins on the trot with a 9.8 (62) to 6.7 (37) result at Henson Park.

Emerging as early flag fancies, the Swans kicked four goals to none in the third quarter after an evenly matched opening half to set up their longest winning streak in the AFLW.

Fish combined well with Swans captain Chloe Molloy (two goals) in attack, while ball magnet Laura Gardiner led the way with 35 touches.

Mim Strom was massive for the Dockers with 15 hitouts, 24 touches and 11 clearances against Swans counterpart Ally Morphett (13 hitouts).
