Hawthorn are still eyeing off West Coast’s No.1 pick and working out what package might attract the Eagles, which means there is no rush to get the deal for Tyler Brockman completed as he might be an additional piece along with pick No.4 and other potential picks that could turn their head.
North Melbourne are also in the hunt, but won’t be parting with both picks two and three to get at pick one – although they might eventually include one pick.
They are certain they will take at least two of the first three picks to this year’s national draft having received compensation for losing Ben McKay to Essendon as a free agent. Several opposition clubs The Age spoke to are still fuming at the AFL’s decision to hand the club two future picks at the end of the first round in their draft assistance package that the AFL Commission approved in grand final week.
North Melbourne are likely to see whether picks 15, 17 and 18 tempt a club with a higher pick.
Melbourne now have picks six and 11 and can always attempt to get up the draft order.
Meanwhile, West Coast are yet to fully open the door on trading pick one.
Some days you have a stack of deals, other days just a lot of talk.
Today was the latter with no official deals announced.
There are a number of players and mooted moves that remain up in the air heading into the weekend and the final days next week.
Thanks once more for joining us and for your comments, please join us again at 9am tomorrow for our day five live blog.
Bye for now.
Some Carlton supporters have been wondering why Carlton were happy to give up pick 17 as part of the Zac Fisher deal to get North Melbourne’s picks 21 and 25 in return.
Both clubs entered the deal valuing Fisher around pick 30, but the Kangaroos did not have that pick as they held pick 21 (too high) and pick 44 (too low).
Once Dylan Stephens went to North, they had picks 21 and 25 as part of their deal with the Swans.
Carlton knew they were likely to get the player they are keen on at either pick 17 or pick 21 (which is still in the first round) in the national draft.
Melbourne star Clayton Oliver was transported to Footscray Hospital by ambulance following a medical episode but has since been discharged.
The club confirmed in a statement that the hospital completed a number of tests before Oliver returned home, but the Demons gave few details.
A Western Health spokesman had earlier confirmed that a 26-year-old man was admitted to Footscray’s emergency department and was no longer in hospital.
“The Melbourne Football Club can confirm that Clayton Oliver was admitted to hospital,” the Demons’ statement on Thursday afternoon said.
Essendon are still expected to lodge a contract for St Kilda restricted free agent Jade Gresham, according to two sources, but no official contract has yet been filed with the AFL.
St Kilda have said they will match the offer to force a trade unless the deal delivers compensation at the end of the first round to the Saints.
Brett Ratten still loves coaching and won’t be sitting back as he joins Sam Mitchell’s staff at Hawthorn.
Ratten will take on the role of head of coaching performance and development after being Alastair Clarkson’s senior assistant coach last season at North Melbourne, in which he took the helm at the Roos for several games while Clarkson took personal leave.
Ratten was part of the Hawthorn coaching staff between 2013 and 2015 during Clarkson’s celebrated tenure.
The former Carlton and St Kilda senior coach is ready to hit the ground running and work with developing both the Hawks’ rising stars and their coaches.
“I still love coaching, and I have a lot to offer in that space,” he said.
“I don’t just want to be sitting back, I want to get my hands dirty, get out there and work with the players and see if we can develop and fast-track some of them.”
Sydney chief executive Tom Harley wants senior assistant coach Don Pyke to stay with the Swans but won’t stand in his way should he put his hand up for the vacant chief executive role at West Coast.
Pyke was a two-time premiership player with the Eagles in the 1990s before becoming a senior coach with Adelaide and, more recently, a highly valued assistant coach for Swans mentor John Longmire.
Pyke is reportedly among the candidates to replace Trevor Nisbett, the long-time boss of the Eagles.
“We love Pykey and we are really hopeful and planning for him to be part of our footy club whilst acknowledging that without going into specifics, there’s a vacant role over at the West Coast Eagles,” Harley told SEN on Thursday.
“You’d have to say it is not a traditional path to that sort of role but he’s a really special talent and we’ve got plans for him over here as well.
“We’ll work with Don really respectfully through that and time will tell. But things are a bit out of our control but if I could wave a magic wand, he’d be staying with us at the Swans and contributing to our programs.”
Melbourne star Clayton Oliver attended Footscray Hospital in recent days but has since been discharged.
A Western Health spokesman has confirmed that a 26-year-old man was admitted to Footscray’s emergency department and was no longer in hospital.
Melbourne are expected to make a statement on Thursday about the matter. A club source confirmed the midfielder’s hospital visit. This masthead has also contacted Oliver’s manager Nick Gieschen for comment.
He’s a hulking teenage key forward from Australia’s croc country, tipped to be the next Charlie Curnow and considered a possible rival to Harley Reid as this year’s No.1 draft pick, but one club has had him sewn up for years.
Meet Jed Walter, the top-end talent from the Top End, who’ll almost certainly land at Gold Coast next month as an academy selection.
