Match report: Geelong snatch top spot with fierce win over tough Demons

By Peter Ryan

Geelong have moved to the top of the ladder after prevailing over Melbourne in the fiercest contest of the year at GMHBA Stadium, reminding other contenders they will need to get through them to win the flag this season.

The Cats hit the front midway through the first quarter then kept their noses ahead of the rapid Melbourne as they went stride for stride and bumped each other all the way down the stretch.

It took a running goal from Cam Guthrie and then Brad Close to convert after a piece of Tom Hawkins creativity gave him a set shot with five minutes remaining for the result to be decided.

Geelong deserved the win as their pressure was elite throughout with Tom Atkins – revitalised as a midfielder – leading the way with eight tackles while Guthrie’s run caused damage.

Thanks for following tonight’s blog.

It was a big win to Geelong in the context of the top four. The Demons, who appeared to bounce back to their best against Brisbane, remain shy of their best footy.

See you back here across a big weekend of footy.

Good night.

Max Gawn speaks post-match

Max Gawn spoke on Seven post-match:

Q: Maxy, a disappointing result on the scoreboard. Where did it unravel for you tonight?

A: We were in it. We definitely were in it. I think it was five points in the last quarter, and they blew away late, a lot of the stats were in their favour in the game. So, we can be so close when we are away from our game, so imagine if we pulled through a couple of the key stats. But the ball just lived in their forward half, and it’s hard to score from Geelong’s forward 50. We went from 23 points down to wrestle it back, as you said.

Q: What are some of the biggest learnings that you take out of that game?

A: Yeah, certainly getting the ball out of our D50. And I personally think they were a little bit harder than us today. They really brought some tough footy. They were in that old jumper, that probably gave them that inspiration. It was a good brand of football.

Chris Scott speaks post-match

Some of the key takeouts from Chris Scott’s press conference:

On the Dees having their moments: “We know we’re going to have moments in games where things are going against us. When you play against certain teams and certain players, you’ve got to give the golf clap and say, ‘that’s too good’. I thought over the bulk of the night, our work around the contest and strength in the contest was a real positive.”

On winning at the coal face: “You just have to [win those contests], there’s no other way. They’re going to kick their fair share of goals, and then you’re going to face them in the centre bounce again. Before they became the premier team in the competition, they’ve been a great contested team. The game was played in a similar manner by both teams tonight. If you get slaughtered in the contest by those guys [Gawn, Oliver, Petracca], you’re in trouble.”

On Atkins’ night: “Atkins and Guthrie, in particular, I thought around the footy were fantastic. We’ve evolved a lot over the years.”

On what tonight means: “We won’t get carried away with the win, it doesn’t make us the best team in the comp. But the things we’re working on does stack up against the best teams. In principle, we are trying to challenge the opposition a bit more.”

On finding new avenues to goal: “We kicked some ugly goals ... we had to keep pressing and take the chances when they presented. I think we missed a few we’d normally have taken. I don’t think they would walk away and say they got beaten because they weren’t quite on. I thought they were on. If they’re better than that, I hope someone else beats them before we have to play them.”

Patrick Dangerfield has spoken post-match in the rooms on Seven.

Q: Well done ... That could have been a lot more if a couple of you blokes kicked straight.

A: It’s why you play footy. We built this one up, we were ready for it. And we feel like we’re – the trajectory we are on is improving every week, and it’s fun to be a part of it.

Q: How long did it take you with the more attacking style that you seem to be playing with this year, how long did it take for the thought to go back safe to creep in? The first quarter blistering start and the mistakes came in, in the second quarter, but you kept finding a way through. How long did it take for you to not want to go there?

Q: Congratulations, skip. You finally get a win against that dominant Dees side. I am sure it tastes pretty bloody good.

A: Well, we will let it sink in later, it’s a special night for us with Isaac [Smith] playing his 250th, and we want to make ourselves known for winning those games.

Q: You played against them three times last year and couldn’t get it done. Where was the difference tonight?

A: I don’t know. We still left a lot out there tonight, 12.19. So, you know, we sort of prepared ourselves really well for this period, and we are on [a hot trot] at the moment, which helps.

FT: Cats 91, Dees 63

By

Cats are on top of the ladder! They’ve won seven in a row.

They were too good for the Dees tonight, and with more accurate kicking, they should have won by more.

The Cats won the clearances by 18, the centre clearances by eight and had 13 more scoring shots.

Mitch Duncan finished with 28 kicks and four handballs, plus two goals.
