As it happened: Collingwood Magpies defeat West Coast Eagles by one point in a classic elimination final
We didn't take our chances: Simpson
West Coast coach Adam Simpson spoke to Channel Seven after the game as well...
Q: Well, Adam, this will be a little consolation. It was a great game of football.
A: Yeah, I'm sure Collingwood think that. I'm sure West Coast don't. Look, it was, you know, another game against Collingwood that went down to the wire and unfortunately we didn't take our chances. They took theirs and stuck at it all day. They deserve to win.
Q: They double-teamed effectively, Nic Naitanui. It was an interesting use of Brodie Grundy. Wasn't the main man against Nic Nat the whole match. How did you feel that worked out in the end?
A: I don't think that was the deciding factor of the game. Yeah, look, the strategy is the strategy. You can't do much about it. We've dealt with things like that before. I thought we didn't take our chances in the second half. First quarter we got outplayed in our D50. [Mason] Cox hitting the first three [goals] and we missed a few opportunities. So, yeah, look, all those by-play issues we can talk about, but in the end we weren't in front at the right time.
Q: Your midfield started slowly and that was a factor obviously.
A: Yeah, I thought there was patches of really good play and patches of really good play from Collingwood. It just felt like opportunities were taken or not taken. Momentum changed, you
know, pretty often after quarter-time. Put ourselves on the back foot at quarter-time unfortunately. Like I said, we weren't in front at the right time.
Q: Such an unusual season. Everybody's played their part to give footy fans around the country a season. How do you reflect on - now that your 2020 is done?
A: We spoke to the staff and players before. Every club is going to have their own story about what sacrifice they made and the players and staff and families. So we're no different than anyone else. Our journey's been a different one, but it's been one of sacrifice for the whole industry. Really proud of our staff and players, what they produced throughout the year, but disappointed tonight. Missed opportunity.
'It was hard-earned': Buckley
Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley spoke to Channel Seven after the game...
Q: Congratulations. That is a famous Collingwood victory tonight.
A: It was. You know, you've got to enjoy that. We set ourselves for it. We think we're able to execute what we wanted to for the most part and, you know, we enjoy the spoils this evening.
Q: I know coaches typically don't like ranking wins and that sort of thing, but that is one of your very, very best wins, Nathan, I'm sure.
A: The club's, I hope so. I'm sure everyone back home would have enjoyed it. We definitely have.
It was hard-earned and, you know, we were pretty confident that we had the capacity. But you still need to execute.
Q: You've been on the road for so long. That can have adverse effects. It can also have a galvanising effect. How have you tried to make sure it's been the latter for you and your group?
A: Well, you just try and look for the positives and we now head back to the Sunshine Coast tomorrow. I think we've just been scheduled for 7:40 at the Gabba, I believe, on the Saturday [against Geelong in the First Semi-Final]. We know what that looks like going forward. We can only ever take the next step, so we focused on the things we can control and, yeah, we've still got a couple more steps to take.
Q: Let's talk about some of your set-up tonight which was superb. Your use of Darcy Cameron in particular and Brodie Grundy, just talk us through what your processes were there.
A: Well, Nic Naitanui was still an exceptional influence on the game. Five centre-bounce goals, largely through, you know, his efforts and the capacity to get the ball through the front. It's one of the few parts of the game now that goes into even numbers and you can't really get support. So we thought that we wanted to tag-team him a little bit. We thought Darcy was really good around the ground and we need to give 'Brodes' a chop-out. He's been a warrior for so long, but I think maybe with a bit of support we can refine that extra 5-10 per cent through this period.
It was tough being locked in quarantine: Mihocek
Brody Mihocek in many respects was the match winner, booting three of Collingwood's last four goals. He spoke to Channel Seven after the game...
Q: Brody Mihocek, absolutely outstanding, mate, tonight. What a game. What about that left-footer too?
A: Yeah, it surprised me as well. Just chucked it on the boot. It curved back nicely. Yeah, it was the sort of settler we needed. Yeah, I couldn't be happier.
Q: Brody, well done tonight. What a sensational effort. I just noticed after you kicked that goal though, you gave a little grin to a couple of your teammates. Was that a little grin of acknowledgement of, "Maybe that was a touch on the lucky side"?
A: It was all on the lucky side, yeah. I think everyone knew it. I even had a snap a bit later and that come off pretty funny. But still went in. It's all good. Yeah, it's just such relief to get the win in the end.
Q: You kicked the goals. You took marks, you had an important job on some of those gun West Coast defenders to really make them accountable. You not only did that, but you're able to get the footy as well. What was your big focus? What were you locking in on to make sure you were able to do the job tonight?
A: We've played them so many times that I know I sort of always go to [Jeremy] McGovern. He's a tough player to stop. Just either win it or draw it is what we went in to the game with. Yeah, it was hard to get into it first half and then, yeah, if you just keep sticking at it, the goals will come. Yeah, they ended up coming and we stopped their influence on the game as well.
Q: Brody, he's a tough man to play on. If you go to an area where the ball is not going to go, he just doesn't go with you and comes off an intercept mark. It is a really tough role to play to get into the right spots on Jeremy McGovern. What's your thought process when you go out there and standing next to him?
A: Always knowing he's going to do it. Sort of didn't go on too many leads up the ground tonight. Just sort of tried my best to stay with him and bring 'Coxy' [Mason Cox] up as well. He still had his influence, but not as much as he would have liked and what Eagles would have liked. Yeah, we just stopped the aerial in the forward half and, yeah, I'm very pleased.
'Not bad for an ex-VFL CHB'
Here's some more social media reaction to tonight's classic elimination final...
It was really special: Adams
Taylor Adams was instrumental for Collingwood tonight and he also spoke to Channel Seven after the game...
Q: Well done tonight. What a win that was.
A: Thanks. It was a great win obviously. To come over here, backs against the wall, to play in front of 30,000-strong West Coast supporters and get the job done was really special. Just a great reward for effort, you know. We prepared really well this week. We executed the plan almost perfectly. It's an
awesome feeling.
Q: Taylor, was part of the plan just to really keep that ball moving? The handball receives when you take a mark, playing on when you took a mark, you just really wanted to keep the ball in motion tonight.
A: Yeah, we tried to move the ball hard forward. We still wanted to put their backline under pressure. We wanted to just try to even numbers in front of the ball. We were able to do that early and hit the scoreboard. Obviously 'Coxy' [Mason Cox] was great up forward, great contest from 'Checkers' in big Darcy Cameron. Certainly was one of our ones into the game.
Q: Talk us through the last 40-50 seconds please.
A: We got back the centre bounce, [Nic] Naitanui was jumping pretty well all night. 'Darce' [Cameron] did a good job, get the ball to ground. We had to scramble from there. We knew how long was left. Just to fight it out, awesome feeling.
Q: Taylor, just congratulations as well on your first All-Australian. You've had a remarkable year and again tonight you were outstanding. It's been a fantastic season for you.
A: Thanks, appreciate it.
Q: Taylor, just one more, mate. Levi Greenwood just a phenomenal effort tonight. Running around with Tim Kelly all night who only had 12 disposals.
A: Yeah, obviously he was given a job tonight, one of the best midfielders in the comp he was on. We can rely on him. We just trust him so much. He's such a selfless guy, he will do anything for the team for us to get the win. I feel sorry for Tim, playing on Levi is a tough gig. Yeah, he did a great job tonight. It was awesome.
Bucks was pumped!
Nathan Buckley sums up how all Collingwood fans feel!
'We've forgotten how good a crowd is': Pendlebury
Captain Scott Pendlebury was one of Collingwood's best tonight and he spoke to Channel Seven after the game...
Q: Scott, what a win, mate. Unbelievable.
A: Yeah, it was. Sort of when Will [Hoskin-Elliott] took that mark, I was looking over at the bench. I wanted to see something with how they started to celebrate, I thought we must have it. These two sides, we definitely know how to have a thriller.
Q: Scotty, did you get a sense you were playing in one of the great games? We loved it. It had everything, high marks, great contest and right down to the last second, could you feel there was something special tonight?
A: You could just feel the energy. I think we've forgotten how good having a crowd is, you know, 35 [thousand fans] or whatever it was tonight. You can see all the finals, the energy they give the game as well. Yeah, it was a really good game.
Q: Brody Mihocek, two [goals] in the last, the left-foot snap on the run, my God.
A: It was a bit like 'Swanny' [Dane Swan] when he kicked one on Anzac Day. They were trying to put it to the top of the square, but it just slid straight through. We will take those.
Q: We saw a couple of times tonight, 'Pendles', where Nathan Buckley backed in the young Darcy Cameron against Nic Naitanui as opposed to [Brodie] Grundy. He stood up when it counted.
A: It was a real team effort. We wanted to try and go, you know, those two boys playing with high energy, we didn't want to run Brodie into the ground. He had such a big workload for probably four years now. I thought Darcy was fantastic down the line, helped the backs out. Thought both those guys did really well.
Q: You'll renew acquaintances with your finals opponents the Cats next week, the most finals in this era, VFL/AFL, Cats and the Pies. It's going to be a corker.
A: It is. I feel like I played all my finals against either West Coast or Geelong. It will be a good game. Just want to enjoy tonight first and then, yeah, play, yeah, Geelong, is it? Looking forward to that.
Q: Just quickly, you had seven days in hard lockdown again, you've had coaching staff, what happens next? When do you fly out? What's the program?
A: I think we fly out tomorrow morning. Yeah, we leave on a bus, we're classified as 'dirty' over here, so - and the crowd let us know that tonight. We will happily get out, get back to the Sunny Coast and be with our family. They will be watching back there. We say a big hello, can't wait to see you tomorrow.
