Suns shine in their Darwin fortress
It was a midfield, ground ball game in the humid Darwin conditions, and the Suns held all the aces. Touk Miller, Noah Anderson and Matt Rowell reigned supreme and looked the equal of any on-ball brigade across the competition.
They dominated the Cats’ midfield quartet of Jack Bowes, Tom Atkins, Brandon Parfitt and Oisin Mullin. Anderson had 41 possessions, Rowell 35 and Miller 32.
The Suns were born to play in the NT. They are now 6-2 in Darwin, after beating the Cats by 64 points, winning their past six across the past three years. That is a 75% strike rate. It was also the highest score of any team this season - 26.8 (164) - and the biggest score a Chris Scott team has conceded.
Gold Coast spent the week in Darwin, coming off a five-day break after beating the Roos last week, and were simply better acclimatised to the 29-degree night and slippery conditions.
If all you knew was that Geelong kicked 100 points, you’d probably have thought they’d won, or at least got very close.
But unfortunately for them, Gold Coast had an absolute blinder in very hot and humid conditions, and kicked the highest score in the history of their club with 164 points. It was a statement display from the Queensland side.
It’s also the largest scoreline of any side so far this season.
Jack Lukosius and Bailey Humphrey both kicked five, while Ben King took the lead in the Coleman race with four tonight.
Gold Coast defeat Geelong 26.8 (164) to 15.10 (100).
It’s a record-breaking night for the Suns, who have now kicked not just the highest score of any side so far this season but also the largest in the history of their club.
They’re at 158 points and are still hungry for more. Bailey Humphrey just hit the post as he looks for his fifth.
Jack Lukosius has five, while Ben King also has four, and Sam Day with three.
Gold Coast have now kicked the highest score of any club this season with a whopping 145 points - and there’s still eight minutes left in the game.
The last six points came from Ben King with his fourth goal of the game.
The match was essentially all wrapped up by three-quarter time, but the Suns haven’t taken an inch of their foot off the gas.
Gold Coast by 72.
Ben King has now hit the lead in the Coleman race, one ahead of Carlton’s Charlie Curnow.
He did it with his third goal this game, level with Sam Day, while Jack Lukosius and Bailey Humphrey both have four each.
The Suns have nine individual goalscorers so far, as they enjoy a 66-point lead.
Max Holmes kicked off the final quarter with the ninth goal for the Cats, but it was quickly answered by Jack Lukosius with his fourth of the night.
It keeps the margin at 66 points, as the Suns eye their biggest win over the Cats in competition history.
Gold Coast by 66.
There’s been some big comebacks this year, but this aint going to be one of them. The Cats are cooked.
They might as well call time on this one and go and book an early morning barramundi fishing tour among the mangroves - make some good use of their time in Darwin.
It will be the Cats’ third straight loss after winning the first seven and they have slipped sixth on the premiership betting table. Hard to believe they still rate ahead of Essendon after this second-rate showing in Darwin.
The Suns midfielders have been supreme. Touk Miller, Noah Anderson and Matt Rowell have looked the equal of any on-ball brigade across the competition and have fed ample supply to their forwards.
They have turned Darwin into a fortress, handling the heat and the slippery conditions with ease. They had an eight goal third term, leading by 66 points and looking every bit the top eight side.
The Cats will be hanging out to get back to the cool confines of GMHBA, hopefully with a couple of barra in their fishing kits.
