KEY POINTS

PIES SWEPT AWAY BY ORANGE TSUNAMI: From a supporter’s point of view, the unfurling of a premiership flag marks the sign off from one season to the next. The Pies’ ceremony next week will take place on a more sober note than usual after this first-up hammering. Craig McRae’s men were comprehensively outplayed by Greater Western Sydney, who made the reigning premiers look rather second rate. The Pies won the territory battle, at least on paper, but the land they won was swept away by the Orange Tsunami. Their inability to defend the Giants’ surge will be a major concern to McRae, whose backline was repeatedly caught out of position by their opposition’s rapid ball movement. The scoring shots were about the same but the difference lay in the Giants’ better conversion, due in no small part to the greater space which they were afforded. The importance of a player can rise when their side loses in their absence, but we already know how much Nathan Murphy means to the Pies. Scott Pendlebury said he is their “best system defender” for his ability to roll off his opponent and help out his teammates. His experience was missed, so too was Jeremy Howe, who is likely to return next week. Darcy Moore was unable to exert his usual influence, limited to just nine disposals and four marks. Premierships aren’t lost in March, let alone the Labour Day weekend, so there is plenty of time for the Pies to find a remedy but it’s another difficult assignment on Friday night against Sydney.

COX DOESN’T WALK THE WALK: Mason Cox was a central figure in the lead-up to the game, but when the main show started he may as well have been up in the stands alongside his summer sparring partner, the Giants chief David Matthews. Cox, who left Giants players bemused by hijacking their pregame ruck drill, did not have his first disposal until after half-time. He finished with just five touches and did not trouble the scorers. He did not walk the walk. Cox, though, was far from the only Magpie to do little. Ash Johnson had just two disposals. Darcy Moore had no impact. Tom Mitchell touched the ball only nine times before being subbed out. Nick Daicos was clearly their best, finishing with 34 disposals, 10 clearances and a goal.

‘We didn’t connect’: McRae wants improvement

By

Collingwood coach Craig McRae spoke to the media post game.

Craig, you were in the game up until about half-time but then the Giants seemed to blow you away in the third. What did you see happening?

I thought there were a couple of critical goals late in the second quarter, centre bounce goals that put a bit of a margin on. The game was pretty tight. Wasn’t as balanced on the scoreboard in particular. Gee, they played well. Looks like they improved in certain parts of their game. Contest was strong. They moved the ball really effectively. Big threats down forward so, yeah, they played extremely well.

Does it feel like it could be a bit of a reality check?

Another amazing milestone for Pendlebury

By

Sporting statistician Swamp has reported that Scott Pendlebury became the first AFL/VFL player to play in front of 20 million fans during his career.

That number is quite staggering but he has played in front of a lot of bumper MCG crowds.

Ward fears he will miss six to eight weeks

By

Giants veteran Callan Ward has told Channel Seven he fears he will miss six to eight weeks with an AC joint injury.

Ward was subbed off at half-time and finished on the bench with his arm in a sling.

“I got driven into the ground. It was pretty bad, maybe six to eight weeks. I’ll have a scan tomorrow and see how it is,” Ward told Channel Seven.

Ward added that he wasn’t trying to “be tough” by attempting to play on after his injury, he just didn’t realise he had hurt himself seriously.

“It wasn’t about being tough. I didn’t know what happened,” Ward admitted.

“I have never done a shoulder before. I was like, “Can I keep playing with this?” It didn’t hurt that much.”

Greene, Green praise Giants

By

Tom Green and Toby Greene spoke to Channel Seven post game.

Q: A great way to start against the reigning premiers?

Green: It is. I thought the first 10 we were slow to get going and after that played our way which was nice and a good first hit-out.

Q: Toby we know how emotional you were in the rooms after the preliminary final last year, this doesn’t make amends but a great way to start the season?

Hogan says his knee is fine

By

Giants forward Jesse Hogan says his knee is fine but he was alarmed by how bad his late-game hyperextension looked on the big screen.

Hogan kicked four goals and took seven marks in an impressive display.

“I saw it up on the big screen and it didn’t look good,” Hogan told Channel Seven.

“I’ve done it a few times, so I must have stretchy ligaments because it didn’t look great but I’m all good. A little ice tonight and I’ll be fine.”

FT: GWS Giants 18.6 (114) d Collingwood 11.16 (82)

GWS Giants have knocked over reigning premiers Collingwood in Sydney tonight.

Last year the Giants fell to Collingwood by a point in the preliminary final, tonight they were clearly the better side en route to a 32-point win.

The Magpies will be better but it is clear that the Giants aim to be right up with the premiership contenders again this season.

Hogan hurts knee

By

Jesse Hogan has hyperextended his knee in the final minutes of the game.

He is playing out the game in the goal square but the Giants will nervously watch and see how he is after the game as we’ve already seen a couple of players do ACLs in very innocuous circumstances this round.

Hopefully, Hogan is all good after some ice and physio treatment.
