Summing up the round we’ve had.

Collingwood defeated Geelong on Friday night to lock away a spot in the top two, a home qualifying final.

Essendon overcame North Melbourne to keep their finals hopes alive, as Ben Cunnington said farewell.

Sydney continued their good run of form, beating the Suns to make their charge towards the eight.

Adelaide fell short against Brisbane, who have lost Jack Gunston for four to six weeks with a knee injury.

Voss presser

Blues coach Michael Voss spoke post-match in his presser.

Michael, how big is that result for you guys tonight.

Yeah, it is pretty big. Don’t know how to express it, really. We were holding on for a period of time there late in the game, and moments wins you those games, and we had a couple of moments go our way really late, so it was a great result.

Second time in three weeks. You said you struggled for words. Do these guys ever cease to amaze you?

Yeah, it’s got a bit better as we have gone. I thought Collingwood was alright, St Kilda was pretty good, that one was best of them all. The biggest thing is we are winning different ways, and we have shown a great adapt built across the year, lots of questions asked of us, but we are showing that resilience and grit, and we are able to put that into the way we are playing. You know, you can see the boys have hunger and desire and they are clear on what’s needed. It felt almost like a finals-like game where we had front half dominance and they had front half dominance and we got the clearances. It was going back and forth for boast quarters and neither team relented.

For one glorious night only, the football codes kicked a goal together

By

It was the night the MCG – and Melbourne’s prized winter sport, Australian rules – effectively played second fiddle to, yep, the world game.

With the nation’s women’s soccer team the Matildas engaged in a sudden-death and edge-of-your-seat World Cup quarter-final thriller against France in Brisbane, it made for some unprecedented scenes at the ’G.

Footy fans decked out in Carlton’s navy blue and Melbourne’s red and blue colours had a foot in another camp as the nation, and sports fans of all persuasions, threw their full sport behind the Matildas and their triumphant progression to the World Cup semis for the first time.

As planned and detailed beforehand, the round-ball action from Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium was shown on the MCG’s big screens until the end of regulation time – after the normal 90 minutes plus stoppage time.

Essendon survive another day in finals pursuit, Cunnington bows out in style

By

If you are only as good as your last game, then Ben Cunnington bowed out on top.

North Melbourne dug deep into their reserves to farewell a favourite son but fell agonisingly close of sending him out a winner despite five goals to Nick Larkey.

For the second Saturday afternoon in a row, Essendon walked the gauntlet against a cellar-dweller and lived to tell the tale, surviving a wholehearted challenge from the Kangaroos to prevail by nine points at Marvel Stadium.

The win keeps the Dons firmly in the finals hunt, but the day will be remembered for the swansong of one of the league’s most admired and respected competitors.

Fremantle close in on 100-point lead

By

It’s an ugly scoreline in Perth.

The Dockers lead 18.12 (120) to 3.7 (25).

Sam Sturt and Lachie Schultz have kicked four each, Jye Amiss has three.

Jordan Clark has racked up 27 disposals, as has Angus Brayshaw, and Caleb Serong has 26 disposals.

But the story is this scoreline. Not looking good for Adam Simpson.

Michael Voss speaks post-match

By

Michael Voss spoke with Cameron Ling on Seven post-match.

Vossy, that’s not good for your health, is it?

No, no. That was amazing. I talk about lessons you learn from one year to the next. We play last year and lose that game by a couple of points and pretty heartbreaking and face almost the same situation and we win by four. Just the desperation in the guys, I’m really proud of them. We had to win a different way today. It was tight and tough, and they were a strong defensive team and a strong attacking team.

There is only so much you can do from the bench. In the last 40 seconds or a minute, it is over to the players.

We had what we needed in place. The boys were able to get it done. We have put in a fair bit of work to make sure the method is right. Not sure about centring to the corridor. We might take that out of play. But outside of that, we had what we needed and Marksy (Caleb Marchbank) went back and he touched it on the line. Without that they get the goal.
