Good evening

By Ronny Lerner

Well, the first day of the trade period has come and gone and there were no shortage of big developments.

Firstly, we had the opening two player movements with GWS pair Tim Taranto and Bobby Hill joining Richmond and Collingwood respectively.

The Giants received picks 12 and 19 from the Tigers in return for Taranto, while they also snared pick 43 and a future second-round pick from the Magpies for Hill.

But there were plenty of other developing storylines with the opening salvos fired over No.1 pick Jason Horne-Francis’ trade request to the Power.

The Kangaroos are steadfast that they will need more than Port Adelaide’s pick no.8 and a future-first round pick to get the deal done.

Trade alert: Taranto becomes a Tiger

By Marnie Vinall

And it hasn’t taken long for the second deal to come through with another Giant Tim Taranto headed through the exit door and into the waiting arms of Richmond in exchange for picks 12 and 19.

The tough, big-bodied midfielder, who can also roll up as a half-forward, has committed to Richmond for seven years, keeping him in the yellow and black until the end of the 2029 season.

After being taken with the second pick at the 2016 draft, the 24-year-old has averaged 23 disposals and booted 48 goals across 114 matches at GWS.

His breakout 2019 season earned him the Kevin Sheedy Medal as the Giants’ best and fairest.

Richmond talent manager Blair Hartley said securing Taranto’s signature was exciting news for the club.

Exciting small forward Bobby Hill has officially changed colours to the black and white, joining the ranks at Collingwood from the GWS Giants.

The 22-year old expressed interest in coming home to Victoria to be closer to family and was exchanged, along with with pick 40, for pick 43 and a future second-round selection.

Hill played 41 games across four seasons with the Giants after being drafted at pick 24 in the 2018 national draft.

In May, he took indefinite leave away from the game following his diagnosis with testicular cancer, but remarkably returned to the Giants’ VFL side in August.

“The Giants gave me my first AFL opportunity and I’ll be forever grateful for that,” Hill said.

Power’s Bonner up for grabs

By Peter Ryan

Contracted Port Adelaide running defender Riley Bonner is on the trading table with other clubs aware he is gettable during this trade period.

The 25-year-old played 17 matches this season for Port Adelaide but was the medical sub in two of the final three rounds.

The South Australian signed a two-year deal at the end of 2021 and could be thrown up during talks around trading Jason Horne-Francis, with the Kangaroos likely to want more than just two first-round picks for the No.1 pick.

Port Adelaide football manager Chris Davies has already ruled out Miles Bergman or Josh Sinn being part of any deal involving Horne-Francis.

By Marnie Vinall

In other news, former NAB chief executive Andrew Thorburn has been appointed as the chief executive officer at Essendon, the club confirmed on Monday via a letter to members from president Dave Barham.

He replaces former Essendon chief executive Xavier Campbell, who resigned following a difference of opinion with new president David Barham over senior coach Ben Rutten’s sacking.

Thorburn has been spearheading the club’s external review of board, administration, staff, football department and culture and The Age revealed last week he was a leading candidate for the job. He will start his new position as CEO on November, 1 after the review is complete.
