Good evening

By Ronny Lerner

Well, that wraps up an action-packed day of footy action.

The Bulldogs down their rivals GWS by 20 points a few hours after Geelong took care of a much-improved West Coast outfit by three goals.

The Eagles looked nothing like a last-placed team in that contest.

But Port Adelaide sprung the surprise of the day in the first game when they comfortably took care of Sydney by 23 points at Adelaide Oval despite losing Zak Butters (knee) and Brynn Teakle (collarbone).

The result kept the Power’s faint finals hopes alive as it drew them two games within the top eight with nine rounds to go.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs’ September ambitions got an even bigger injection with their victory seeing them get within a game of the top eight.

Thank you for tuning in throughout the day and night and be sure to join us again next week when we do it all again for Round 15.

Bulldogs overcome Bailey Smith drama with strong win over Giants

By Malcolm Conn

The Western Bulldogs have made the Bailey Smith drugs controversy yesterday’s news and relit their finals hopes with victory over the GWS Giants at the Sydney Showgrounds on Saturday night despite a spectacular seven-goal performance from Toby Greene.

The 20-point win has left the Bulldogs only a game out of the final eight with a competitive percentage after St Kilda and the Sydney Swans were beaten earlier in the round.

But Saturday night’s match was hardly a barometer of finals football, with entertaining ball movement far more prevalent than concerted defensive pressure. The 230 points was the highest kicked in a match this season. Click here to read more.

‘I was not as capable’: Weightman on elbow injury

By

Five-goal hero Cody Weightman spoke to Channel Seven after the game...

Q: How is the elbow?
A: They could pop it back in and then I was much better. Nice to play on.

Q: Dislocation?
A: I think so. Lucky it went back in.

Q: How did it feel? You kicked five goals, the game is in the balance, but then to come back on and contribute, tackle and chase and you did the hard stuff.
A: I was not as capable in the second half. I was aware that GWS were one rotation down so we had that advantage on them. Hopefully run out again. I was pretty much out there as a rotation more than anything. Happy to do my bit. And helping the others cash in like Naughton.

Q: Could you sense how quickly it (the game) was moving back and forth?
A: Yes, I was cactus. Full speed. They are fit team, GWS. We knew that. That could play into their hands. Fortunately the boys could outrun them and get the result.

Finals destiny in Bulldogs’ hands: Naughton

By

Star Bulldogs forward Aaron Naughton spoke to Channel Seven after the game...

Q: Well played, that looked fun. It is always fun when there are plenty of goals. What causes a shootout? So often when it looks like it is going to be, the coaches say let’s lock it down, was there anything different about tonight from your standpoint?
A: I don’t know, to be honest. A little bit of the centre bounce. That helps when it is even in front of the ball. That is where the scores come from.

Q: The mids use the ball really well inside 50. Plenty of one-on-one. Likely to score more
and take a few more marks. It was good.
A: And the ability of the midfielders to deliver inside forward 50. You obviously had some tall targets as well. Jamarra helping out. You are not able to get that isolation that you needed.
The other boys do not get the reward tonight. The contest. Drawing it was really helpful
tonight which was good.

Q: When you went forward for the first time did you think there would be a permanent transition or was it temporary?
A: Temporarily, I think. I am happy now. We will see what happens.

Q: We saw ‘Bevo’ chatting at halftime, was it a free-flowing game or something different?
A: A little bit. We were letting them come through the corridor too much. The forwards and midfielders. Tightened that up which I think we did in the second half. That allowed us to score more.

Dale acknowledges importance of win in terms of finals hopes

By

Bulldogs defender Bailey Dale spoke to Channel Seven after the game...

Q: Fantastic victory - 19 marks inside forward 50. Schache and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan inside forward 50, was really impressive to have Naughton as well.
A: Big targets for us to kick to tonight. That was handy. Did not use the ball as we would have liked. But we had a good victory in the end.

Q: Really tough around the contest in terms of contested possession and you seem to get on top in the third term.
A: From the centre clearances, started getting on top and that helped again get us going. ‘Libba’ was massive and Tim and Jack as well. Those guys got us going. Great stuff.

Q: A bit of an indifferent year for the Doggies so far but you have got six of the top-eight sides to play, really important win tonight.
A: Really important. We cannot drop too many now. To start off with a win tonight and hopefully that can kickstart the rest of the season.

Macrae praises Weightman toughness

By

Jack Macrae was one of the Bulldogs’ best and he spoke to Channel Seven after the game...

Q: Terrific win tonight. A really bruising encounter.
A: We always have a great contest against these guys. Great rivalry. We knew it would be a dogfight. And obviously they lost a few towards the end which helped us in the second half. Great that we battled. And did not let off in the last quarter.

Q: Surprisingly open game in terms of one-on-ones forward of the footy and Toby
Greene has kicked seven and Jesse Hogan with three. Coming away with a really strong win.
A: We do not defend the way we wanted. We turned over coming into the middle and then left defenders open. We have to work on that. Toby is a special player. Great game.

Q: And the effort of Cody Weightman to get back out there and present after a five-goal first half?
A: I don’t think people give credit to how tough he is. And how much work he puts into his game. Good to have him firing.

GWS Giants 5.4, 9.7, 11.8, 16.9 (105)
W.Bulldogs 6.1, 10.6, 16.9, 19.11 (125)

DISPOSALS
GWS Giants: Coniglio 32, Green 32, Whitfield 30
W.Bulldogs: Macrae 37, Treloar 31, Bontempelli 28, Dunkley 27

It was a game that resembled a gun-slinging shootout from the Wild West (apt, given the names of the competing clubs).

But in the end, the Bulldogs were the ones left standing, winning an entertaining affair by 20 points.

Super seven for Greene

By

Greene increases his career-high tally to seven goals with a lovely set shot from 48m out.

But it’s too little, too late for GWS, and with 2:16 remaining, the Bulldogs lead by 20 points, 19.11.125 to 16.9.105.

That Greene goal made this the highest scoring game of the year.

Dunkley slams door shut on Giants

By

Dunkley snuffs out the Giants’ faint hopes with a converted set shot from 35m out on a sharp angle.

He was pretty lucky to get that opportunity, because the free kick he got for being pushed in the back was very dubious. In fact, it was downright soft.

But in any case, the goal is in the books and the Dogs now lead by 25 points with 4:14 to go, 19.10.124 to 15.9.99.
