Hardwick hopes tonight kick-starts flag assault
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick spoke to the media after the game...
Q: Do you feel like tonight coupled with some of your key players starting to return can be a kick-starter and get you rolling a bit?
A: We hope so. It’s a matter of ticking over the wins. Once again our side is sort of building, starting to come together from a connection point of view. They haven’t played the majority of the season. Takes a bit of time to gel. That’s slowly happened. Tonight at various stages. We’re going to get better in some areas. (Kane) Lambert is available to play next week which is a positive for us. We’re not sure what happens with Dion (Presita) and Toby Nankervis is progressing lot better than we think. We have players that will hopefully come into selection frame this week. We have a bit of a way to go with how well we’ll play. We’re going OK. We did a hell of a lot better.
Q: Damien the change of bringing the game against West Coast forward, how does that go with management of players. Does it mess around with that, any of the management of your players.
A: We’ll fly back tonight to Sydney. We’ll reset. Look, our guys have to be flexible and agile. I think the AFL and West Coast and Richmond did a wonderful job of thinking through the process and did it pretty smartly. West Coast want to play the game at home. Challenge will be for us to fly back over. Our players are prepared. They’ll prepare well again this week like we did this week and look forward to the challenge come Sunday next week.
Q: Could you just explain why the decision to go back to Sydney for the week and come back again?
A: It worked out better from a quarantining point of view we go back to Sydney.
Q: You’ll fly Saturday, the day before the game?
A: We play Sunday, we’ll fly Saturday.
Q: Seventeen nights on the road. You can see the finish line. How do you make sure that everyone stays fresh for the next six, seven days, whatever it is?
A: Look, our guys have done this, did a reasonable job last year. Our guys look at it as a positive. Once again to be around the group and connect. Young players come into the fold a lot more. Learn a bit more about each other both on and off the field. That’s exciting for us. Our players enjoy the aspect of going away and spending time together. That’s not to say we don’t miss people we left at home. Our guys cope with it very well. It’s strengthen our program. No doubt it keeps us in good stead moving forward for the remainder of the year.
Q: Just Mabior Chol’s first 15 minutes, it looks like he’s only just scratched the surface.
A: It’s exciting isn’t it. Once again he rose to the challenge. ‘Marbs’ is impressive. He’ll get used to playing that role a bit more with Toby missing maybe a couple more. Gives him an opportunity to get into the game. We’re excited what he can offer. As is CJ (Callum Coleman-Jones). These opportunities they get, they are grasping with both hands. Certainly found some players that we think we’ll keep us in good stead moving forward.

Tigers reinforce premiership credentials
Richmond know all about thriving on the big stage in recent years, and while Saturday night’s Dreamtime clash was not a final, they delivered an important statement in posting a 39-point win over Essendon at Perth’s Optus Stadium. Click here to read Jon Pierik’s full match report.
Bolton is an absolute freak: Dusty
Dustin Martin was once again one of Richmond’s best and he spoke to Channel Seven after the game...
Q: Unbelievable finish to the game Dusty.
A: It was. It was a bit of seesaw battle. They came back there. Credit to them. Proud of the boys to stand up when it mattered.
Q: Dusty when they got in front there what goes through at the next centre bounce. Who is the player that brings in and talks about what you will do at the next centre bounce? They were on fire. Kicked four goals in five minutes.
A: We have great leadership in there. Trent (Cotchin) and Dion (Prestia) and Shai (Bolton) and the other boys. We stuck to the process.
Q: Just around the back six or back seven how many go back there? You don’t spend a lot of time back there, you’ll be impressed by that group down there how they defend all the time.
A: Yeah, they’re awesome. Week in and week out they do a great job. Couldn’t be more proud of that group. As I said week in and week out, they get it done. They’re an awesome bunch.
Q: Dusty you must have been surprised how the Western Australia public embraced Dreamtime.
A: It was awesome. It’s my favourite game of the year. It’s super special. It was just an awesome night tonight. Crowd unbelievable.

Graham knew Tigers would run over Dons
Richmond’s Jack Graham spoke to Channel Seven after the game...
Q: Congratulations. A huge game. Huge crowd. You guys when you were challenged found a way to kick away and seven goals in 16 minutes.
A: It was a four-quarter effort. We stuck to our process we knew we could run over them in the end. Credit to the boys. Bloody huge game.
Q: Jack, how do you compare that atmosphere tonight. Nothing really compares with the grand final, but how close does it come to grand final playing in front of a 55,000 audience in the arena. It’s superb arena to play footy on.
A: It’s awesome arena. Especially for the occasion for Dreamtime. Last week there wasn’t many there in GWS. Tonight, the fans turned out. It was an awesome atmosphere. Great deck with the lights. It’s unreal.
Q: Jack, how hard is it to actually hear out there tonight. Number of times we could see the umpires yelling at players. They couldn’t hear them. Was it that loud out there tonight?
A: It was really loud. Couple of boys couldn’t hear. Jack (Riewoldt) gave away a free kick. That’s probably Jack being Jack. Not too sure. It’s a bit harder from last year where you know there’s no-one at the games. You can hear everyone’s nicknames on the field, now you have to scream for the ball.
Q: It looks like you guys care for each other on and off the football field. We see it at training over the week. The way you go about the training schedules. Looks like you genuinely care for each other on and off the field.
A: It’s a brotherhood here at Richmond. Especially this week being Dreamtime at the ’G with so many Indigenous boys. Such an important part to our group and bring so much energy. To get the win for them and everyone else, it’s a great game. What a win.
