That’s all for tonight

By Roy Ward

That’s all I have for you tonight everyone.

Thanks so much for joining us on this unusual night and please stick with us this weekend as we will have more AFL blogs on Saturday and Sunday.

Sadly, I’ll be working on our COVID-19 blogs this weekend but please feel free to stop by and see what the latest happenings are during lockdown and with our cases numbers here in Victoria.

The COVID-19 blogs are free and outside our paywall so you can find out this vital public health information.

On a late note from the footy, Melbourne star Ed Langdon who was replaced in the final minutes is said to have suffered a head knock so under AFL rules it appears he will be out for 12 days or thereabouts so that could be a tough absence for the Demons to cover.

On the game:

We started on the back foot and we didn’t really recover. We were expecting at some point to get a run on a little bit but you know credit to Melbourne they - most of the year we have been able to out work sides and see it through and tonight they had most of the bases covered and we couldn’t force anything and you know it was only torn out loss felt like more in the end.

Did you identify a reason for the turnovers? Was it Melbourne’s defensive pressure or skill errors?

I suppose it’s difficult to see watching the game on the broadcast. You could clearly see at times the options were there and it was pure skill. There were a number of times the decision attached to the disposal wasn’t the most ideal. Combination of game sense and skill. You know, it’s the way we play. We take the game on at times. Tonight they probably put themselves into good positions and we didn’t execute as well as we have with the Sherrin.

Goodwin says Harmes was sensational

By

That was a pretty incredible performance on Tom Liberatore considering Libba is leading the comp in clearances, I think only had four tonight. What did you make of James’ performance?

He was sensational. You know, we gave him that role early in the week. We wanted him to really nullify, especially at stoppage and clearance. He certainly executed his role incredibly well. Liberatore’s been a massive player for the Dogs and his ability to win it on the inside and get it to a lot of their players on the outside.

I thought his role was instrumental in getting some dominance, especially early in the game around clearance.

You’ve obviously done a great job this year of the players ignoring the ex, hype and ignoring the external noise. The premiership favourite tags come in articles this weekend, discussion next week. Do you address that with the players or let them deal with it?

Not at all. That’s the furtherest thing from our minds at the moment. This group has been sensational at just resetting. And dealing with each week that comes their way. I know from a supporters’ perspective, it’s brilliant what the boys are doing and I’m sure our supporters are incredibly excited. So they should be. We’ve still got a lot of improving to do as a side in the second half of the year to be the team that we want to be and to execute when it really matters. That’s our sole focus, to make sure we reset every week and make sure we reset every week and make sure we continue to improve as the year goes on.

You must be pretty impressed with that. How happy were you with the way that the guys started tonight?

Yeah, I thought it was a sensational start of the game. I thought the mids got on top of clearance and centre bounce. They gave us great ascendancy in the game. Forward pressure was really strong. We were able to score early in the game which gave us a really good buffer and enabled us to dictate how the rest of the game was played. That was really pleasing to get off to that fast start. It is something we have been working on the last few weeks and it went a long way to winning the game.

Was that your almost complete performance of the year? I know you put it together in quarters and halves. Did you really feel tonight that was just a four-quarter performance?

Yeah, I think just in terms of the opposition, when you’re playing against a quality side, their ability to transition the ball from inside to outside has been really strong. So our ability to defend strongly and win enough contests and be fishing going forward was clearly on show for the majority of the night. I was just really proud of the boys, the way they went about it. It wasn’t the perfect week, but the ability to deal with that, maturity shown and ability to execute what we were trying to do was outstanding. That’s clearly one of the best performances for the year.

Melbourne stamp their premiership credentials in style

By Peter Ryan

Melbourne have claimed top spot from the Western Bulldogs in a 28-point victory that will have every Demon supporter dreaming premierships.

It was a whole of club win built on the back of players executing a brilliant coaching plan to stifle the Bulldogs’ ball movement that was devised and communicated while the state shutdown in an attempt to quell the latest coronavirus outbreak.

The only thing Melbourne were interested in shutting down however was the Western Bulldogs’ ability to move the ball out of defence and they did so brilliantly forcing the Bulldogs into mistake after mistake as they turned the ball over repeatedly while attempting to switch the play and find an avenue towards goal.

May praises Petracca for lifting defensively

By

Demons defensive leader Steven May has also singled out Christian Petracca for buying into team defence this season.

“He’s been amazing for us offensively, we are trying to get him to buy into team defence more,” May told Fox Footy.

“He’s been super the last few weeks in jumping back and getting a few intercept marks and spoils. It’s been massive.“

May hails Demons defence

By

Melbourne defensive leader Steven May has praised his players for standing tall defensively against the high-scoring Western Bulldogs tonight.

The Demons are keeping teams to around 65 points per game in the first 11 games and tonight the Bulldogs could only manage 59 points against the Demons.

“To come out here against the side I think is the top offensive side in the AFL, I’m so proud of the lads,” May told Fox Footy.

“It’s no secret the Bulldogs like to feed back and run around you. They have so many elite midfielders, we were happy for them to switch it if they wanted to.

“We wanted to keep the corridor jam-packed with our players and we had some intercept players down the line if they chose to kick to that.

“It’s bloody hard if they get through but more often than not we could pressure them and keep it in our front half.”

Melbourne Demons have given their premiership credentials another big boost with a 28-point win over the Western Bulldogs on Friday night football.

The two clubs came into the match with 9-1 records but the Demons left no doubt they are the superior side right now as they took apart the ball movement of the Bulldogs by hustling and pressuring them into errors with Steven May, Jake Lever and their defenders leading the way in that regard.

Any question around the forward line was answered too as Bayley Fritsch and Tom McDonald kicked three goals each while Sam Weidemann kicked two majors and took some big marks.

The Bulldogs won lots of the footy but failed to make any use of it which will be alarming for them. The silver lining is that there is time for the Bulldogs to fix this issue and come back bigger and better.

But, for now, Melbourne is 10-1 and the best side in the AFL although an in-form Brisbane Lions are waiting for them next weekend.

It should be a cracker.

‘Good to find out your vulnerabilities’ says Pearce

By

Channel Seven commentator Daisy Pearce has made a great point about this loss for the Bulldogs and how it might help their premiership chances.

She believes this match could do the Bulldogs good now they have had a mirror put in front of them by the Demons.

“Not all is lost for the Dogs though,” Pearce said.

“To find out your vulnerabilities at the midway point of the season, it gives you an opportunity to really go to work on where teams are getting to you.”
