By Roy Ward

Thanks so much for joining us tonight.

We will be back with another live blog tomorrow afternoon for a Super Saturday of AFL games and we will also have our live blog working on Sunday for Anzac Day footy.

On the fast finish from the Bulldogs:

“It’s disappointing because we probably tried to drag them down a little bit to the level. I thought we were doing it for about three quarters and then they opened up with some really good hands. They are very good at it, they are a good side. Clearly six and zero you are doing something right. They are very, very good at their contest method, we have known that for a long time. They have probably gone to another level.

“We probably couldn’t control Macrae and Treloar and Dunkley all at once. I thought we had Bontempelli under control for a little bit, but then these other guys bobbed up. Anyway, good experience for some of the young fellas to play on some elite midfielders, but we are really disappointed with our last 15 minutes.“

On the Giants and his side’s injuries:

“It does at the end of tonight. We have been a bit fortunate at the start of the year not too many casualties. We lost a few tonight. The game probably as one-on-one as you get the way that they are defending GWS.

“Such enormous effort by the boys to break loose like we did in the last quarter from that. We couldn’t get any space, couldn’t move the footy. They were keeping the ball off us, we weren’t defending well enough. We held our nerve. The boys weren’t necessarily having the best outing. They really persevered and stood up well in the last quarter.

“The lads were consistent throughout the course of the night. It just all come together through stealth and through their work ethic. Yeah, it’s a terrific win in the end.”

‘I don’t think we fear anyone’ - Liberatore

By

Bulldogs veteran Tom Liberatore has declared his team doesn’t fear anyone in the competition after being asked which AFL midfield concerns him most.

Liberatore didn’t have an immediate opinion on who concerned him most.

“I don’t think that we fear anyone,” Liberatore told Channel Seven.

“I am not sure. You can’t really go past the Tigers at the moment. It will be an interesting battle next week.”

Seven commentator Luke Hodge had a good call after listening to Liberatore.

“Libba wouldn’t have a clue who is in the other football team - he would just play,” Hodge said.

Wood expects English won’t face Richmond

By

It’s only minutes after full-time but Bulldogs veteran Easton Wood doesn’t expect ruck/forward Tim English will be able to play against Richmond next week given he went off with a suspected concussion so would have to sit for 12 days.

Wood also poured his heart out about Lin Jong’s hamstring injury in the first term and Josh Dunkley’s late shoulder injury.

“It was a shame to see a few of our boys go down,” Wood said.

“A really heavy knock to Tim English. With the new rules in place, we probably won’t have him the next week.

“Poor Jongy, my heart breaks for that man. He is so well-loved within the club and he has put in such a body of work. First game since round 4 last year and bang.

“I am not sure happened to Josh in the end there. He is as tough as they come. Hopefully he’ll be OK. Even he is human.”

FT: Western Bulldogs 14.14 (98) d GWS Giants 9.11 (65)

By

It took them three long, painful quarters but the Western Bulldogs found their best form to dispatch rivals GWS Giants by 39 points at Manuka Oval tonight.

But their six-straight win to start 2021 has come at a cost with Lin Jong (hamstring), Josh Dunkley (dislocated shoulder) and Tim English (concussion/jaw) all in doubt for next weekend’s showdown with reigning premiers Richmond Tigers.

The Giants were tireless and battled beyond their years in the first three terms to be down just three points going into the last term but then the class and ruthlessness of the Bulldogs came to the fore as they booted nine goals to three to make sure of the victory.

Jackson Macrae had 40 possessions to lead his side while Toby Greene’s four goals were just return for his class and awareness close to goal.
