Dusty and Prestia won’t play next week, Grimes and Lambert no guarantee

By

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick spoke to the media after the game...

Q: How do you assess that performance overall, Damien?
A: It is disappointing. Didn’t quite play the way we would like to. A lot of that was down to the good play of Melbourne. I thought they were very good tonight. Defensively, did some nice things. We really struggled to score inside 50. We nearly had entries but just couldn’t kick a winning score, which was disappointing. A lot of that was down to their pressure but there was also perceived pressure. We didn’t handle that well. We spoke about that’s half the game. You can handle losing but sometimes the way you lose doesn’t look great and I don’t think it looked great for us tonight. We are disappointed, we will take stock, get better and move on.

Q: An update on Dusty?
A: Yes, concussed. He will obviously miss next week which is disappointing. It is the lie of the land at the moment. Wellbeing and health is in our medical staff. We will abide by that and take his 12 days.

Q: Did you play him a lot forward?
Look, it is funny. He has had some foot issues that once again, they have not been significant but it has impacted him. Last week was a little bit the same. In fairness, although he is going to miss some time it might be the best thing for him. He is a proud man. He will never put up his hand and complain but the fact of the matter is he hasn’t been his explosive self because of that so he will get better

Q: What about Dylan Grimes?
A: Yes, Dylan, I’m not too sure. I think he will be OK. Kane is obviously a calf. How severe we are not sure. Obviously he didn’t finish the game so he would be doubtful for next week we will presume.

Hibberd did a great job on Dusty: Goodwin

By

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin spoke to the media after the game...

Q: Can we start with Christian Petracca. So much talk about Christian v Dusty during the week. How defining was his game tonight?
A: Look, Christian was brilliant. He was one of 22 guys contributing and clearly contributed strongly. Christian would never build it up as that sort of Christian v Dusty thing. I know the media were thinking about that way but I was rapt that our 22 contributed the way we did. I thought Christian played a big part in that. There is no doubt he is turning himself into a really, really strong player, and a player that I think we can trust and continue to perform to a really high level.

Q: It seemed like in the first 15 minutes it was a Richmond game, a lot of territory for them. Were you happy with the way you absorbed them and what sort of turned it around after that?
A: That was the most pleasing thing. Richmond are a great side, we know that. They are going to have times in the game where they have huge momentum and they are going to have time-and-a-half and it just happened to be in the first 15 minutes of a pretty good game we had to absorb a lot. I thought our defenders stood up incredibly well. Probably shifted on the back of losing more contest. We were losing critical contest. We were probably a bit ‘ball-watchy’ in contest areas. Then we started to win more and get the game looking like a Melbourne game. I thought the way we defended throughout the night was outstanding.

Q: What enables you to do that during games so far this year?
A: I think our leadership group has been really strong. We have got two leaders that are very public in terms of Max Gawn and Jack Viney but we have got other guys underneath. They have been really great in their ability to reset the team in critical moments. I think they are getting a lot of confidence out of being able to absorb pressure and absorb momentum and get the game back looking our way. They have worked really hard at resetting themselves in those situations and I think our leaders continually stand up in critical moments for us and they did it again tonight.

Q: How do you measure pressure?
A: There is a whole range of things in terms of the pressures. It is where you want it on the ground, it is when you want it. We have worked really hard at our inside and outside method, which is our contest and our ability to win the ball, but also how we defend in contest areas. But I thought when the ball went inside 50 tonight I thought our small forwards once again, I thought they were brilliant. Spargo, Pickett and even our talls were joining in that phase of the game. Yes, pressure is important to us but I think it is how you defend around that as well.

Dockers destroy winless Kangaroos

By

Unfortunately, things went downhill pretty badly for North after quarter-time as Fremantle booted 11 goals to four to run out comfortable 51-point winners.

Fremantle owned the contested possessions 154-125, clearances 37-25 and inside 50s 54-43, and finished with 11 more scoring shots (29-18).

Three big reasons for the Dockers’ domination of the contested ball were Fyfe (23), Serong (17) and Mundy (15) who combined for 55.

North actually had more disposals 395-385, marks 128-98, tackles 63-56, free kicks 16-15 and hitouts 33-29.

Fremantle 3.4, 7.9, 11.13, 14.15 (99)
Nth.Melb. 2.2, 3.5, 5.9, 6.12 (48)

GOALS
Fremantle: Schultz 4, Taberner 4, Mundy 3, Colyer, Darcy, walters
Nth.Melb: Stephenson 2, Phillips, Larkey, Goldstein, Campbell

DISPOSALS
Fremantle: Fyfe 34, Serong 34, Brayshaw 30, Mundy 30, Hughes 27
Nth.Melb: Ziebell 37, Cunnington 25, Powell 25

Gawn has ‘complete trust’ in Luke Jackson

By

Melbourne captain Max Gawn spoke to Channel Seven after the game...

Q: What a night for your football club. Nathan Jones 300 games. You celebrated with a win. You must be pumped.

A: We had to make sure we did it the right way. Nathan, he has played 300 games for the club. He has done things we will never know. Created myself to be a player, a leader but also a person he has really developed me as well. When I first got to the club I didn’t have to form some stereotype, he let me be me. That is his legacy. We have players being individual. It is a little bit of Nathan’s legacy coming up there.

Q: Do you reckon that will be something that will drive you on for the rest of the year, to have a successful season for Nathan?
A: I don’t know if he is playing on after this year but it will be something to send him off with. These sort of guys. Pickett never knew Nathan Jones played more than two years. There are guys that haven’t known Nathan has been around that long. The older guys, there is respect there. Hopefully Nathan can go on. Veterans, if they can find another win he could go on.

Q: The Toby Nankervis (battle was) old-fashioned, you went hard at it all night and in the end you got it.
A: Nankervis, he is very good in the clearance but I was able to stick a couple of marks as well, which is good. I love playing him. He is a work horse and one of my toughest opponents in the AFL. He
is so honest the way he works up and down the ground. Like I said, his clearance work is good. We had a good battle. He got me early but I reckon I pegged him back.

We love playing with Gawn and Jones: Salem

By

Christian Salem was pretty unlucky not to win the medal, registering 39 disposals, seven marks, six inside 50s and nine intercepts. He also joined Channel Seven after the game...

Q: Talk about how Max Gawn’s form is, and how much you love being around him.
A: It is unbelievable, isn’t it? You can see by the stats that he is covering the ground well and winning contest and giving the mids first use.

Q: As a defender, how confident do you feel when you look around and Max has worked his backside off to come and help you guys out?
A: Definitely makes it a lot easier. All the mids, they are getting back very quick in supporting us. It allows us to do our job in the air and they take of the ground.

Q: Talk about Adam Tomlinson and the role he is playing, because I think it is really critical to your backline, locking down on Jack Riewoldt tonight, a really good forward in the game which allows Jake Lever to do what he wants to be.
A: Got into the club early days as a winger, and we thought his strength as a back would put him on show and he has done a good job adjusting down back. It is helping Lever and Steve May bring out their strength.

Q: Christian, record numbers for you tonight. I think previously it was 32 (possessions), and 39 tonight, I think you have had. Talk to us about your gain in confidence and self-belief.
A: Last year was a disappointing year, and we had a big pre-season as a group, so for me, just putting my strengths on show, and having that consistency, and the team is going well and we are reaping the rewards off that as a back six.

Q: What about your handball game as a team? I thought one thing you completely dominated Richmond, with three or four handballs and somebody could be out in space, that was really a feature of the game.
A: I think early we were pretty shaky, the pressure was enormous in the first quarter, and once we settled in we were able to get the hand game going. They come forward in defence and if one or two handballs break some lines, we can get them out the back in the second half.

Q: We can’t let you go without speaking of Nathan Jones.
A: It is unbelievable, isn’t it. We had his video, and it was goosebumps. We just love playing with him and this one is for him.

Petracca adjudged best afield

By

There was an odd moment after the game when the presenter of the inaugural Checker Hughes Medal for best on ground in the Anzac Day eve match didn’t know who won it.

Eventually, it was confirmed that Petracca won the medal and it was well deserved as he racked up 38 disposals (six contested), six tackles, 10 clearances, seven inside 50s, 11 score involvements, and a goal
