We were going down the gurgler at quarter-time: Longmire
Sydney coach John Longmire spoke to the media after his side’s thrilling win against Geelong...
Q: John, you must be thrilled. That was a really - you know, a close contest but a really good fight by your blokes to come back from where they were at quarter-time.
A: We were in a lot of trouble at quarter-time, no question about that, whether it was contested footy, uncontested footy, scoring shots. There wasn’t much green in the coach’s box in a couple of key indicators put it that way. We were in a bit of trouble at quarter-time but from - certainly for the next couple of quarters we were able to slowly get back in the game and we were able to do that through a few different ways, but we were able to have good belief in keeping in there and keep pushing away. You know, they were pretty good the Cats. If you look at the stats, probably not a lot of time spent looking at them because you know certainly after first-quarter they - the stats were right out-of-the-box. But the belief to keep going and keep working and couple of big efforts by some players and that’s what got us over the line.
Q: Character-building these sort of wins? Not just a great opposition but they dominated.
A: Yeah, look, it’s - you wouldn’t want to have that comeback with that stat sheet every week and expect to win a lot of games of footy. But sometimes you can get over the line and find a way. And there are -- they’re a very good experienced team with only a couple stars out. They had a massive win last week and they got off to a flyer. So to be able to come back and claw your way back into the game, show great spirit and you know really good feeling amongst them. Our boys did a good job to be able to hang in there and claw back.
Q: It wasn’t just the usual suspects like Parker and Kennedy it was also Oliver Florent and Rowbottom in the last quarter not just with the goals but general play. How much pride do you have in that next generation coming through, coming up and stepping up in a big game like this?
A: We need to. We’ve been - we have belief in them and there’s the matter of having do it and that feeling when you have done it. Those are the things that go together to be able to build on your experience and there’s only one thing because you get a good feeling. Because it’s hard to say how you feel when you play a good team in red hot form at quarter-time and going down the gurgler and then to change the momentum back slowly but surely. At half-time we felt like we turned a little bit. It wasn’t going to happen in one quarter. We needed to spend the rest of the game getting back and that was just some belief. It was amazing.
Q: What about Hayden McLean’s game tonight? He presented himself well in the forward line.
A: He did. We went in with a bit of a different forward set-up when you consider Hayden and Callum Sinclair as our two key forwards. So, you know, against a defence that’s well renowned as being quality, fortunately we took our chances and kicked straight because that helps a lot and makes you obviously more efficient. Those guys did a good job.
Q: Can you take us through what happened with Tom Hickey obviously coming back after a week for a two-month injury and play so well?
A: Still scratching my head about it to be honest. He’s - he - we think he might have hurt it in
2016 a couple of years ago. He completely tore it two weeks ago. And so we think maybe that’s why he’s been able to recover so much. His knee is a bit used to it. There was sloppiness in there already. It wasn’t a complete tear. That’s the only way you can sense. He responded this week and trained all week. When he trained all week we sat down on Thursday said he’s trained, done centre bounces, what more do we want to do? Play him. Very rarely do you see it. I have seen Adam Goodes do it a couple of times with posteriors. It has happened through games. Goodesy I remember didn’t miss a week. Doesn’t happen too often particularly in a ruckman.
Q: Basically his knee is cooked that’s why he was good?
A: I don’t know how you look at it. I think his knee must have been used not having a posterior cruciate. That’s what I’ve been told. Whatever it was it did a good job.

Historic Geelong stat
Under Chris Scott, the Cats have kicked six goals in the first quarter 22 times and tonight is the first time they have been beaten having done that.
Geelong led by 28 points at quarter-time, 6.5.41 to 2.1.13, but ended up losing by two points.
Cameron’s mark clearly traveled 15m: Scott
Geelong coach Chris Scott spoke to the media after his Cats’ agonising two-point loss...
Q: Chris that’s a pretty tough loss to stomach. What are your first thoughts about tonight’s game?
A: Well, try to be a bit glass half full. That’s always a challenge when you are so disappointed in a result like that, but if I stay with the glass half full approach it’s unusual to dominate a game like that statistically and not get the result. So, I think without reeling off too many stats - plus 26 inside 50s you don’t often lose and plus 89 in possessions. Virtually every statistic or measure was our way, we won scoring shots by eight, but the other side of it is there’s no good saying we played really well and didn’t execute because execution is a key part of playing well. The opposition, especially after quarter-time, played well and they executed really well their accuracy in front of goal was probably the difference in the game, 12.6 to whatever it was.
Q: You were up by five goals early in the match. What was it that changed? Not just the statistics and you know like you said you were still getting the ball inside 50. What was that changed that allowed the Swans to get back into the match and overrun you eventually?
A: I think we were beating around the ball. As I said, they marked the ball a bit more in the second quarter and took their chances. We gave them a few easy marks inside 50. But you know, they played better than they were. And they play their style. They played a bit harder, man on man. Their contest work picked up. I still thought we out-played them, at least in terms of the statistical measures. We weren’t looking at it saying they continue to get away from us. If we were a bit better in front of goal and bit more efficient with the ball going inside. Even if we weren’t if you overrun with 25 plus inside 50s you win the game. Late we had our chances. I’m not sure - probably - really important to me and to us that you know we lose with good grace. It is - that’s a challenge because, yeah, it’s bitterly disappointing. Disappointing for us.
Q: Can you identify now immediately after the game what could have helped you get over the line?
A: Late? Yeah, I mean if Jeremy Cameron had have had that shot. He’s the best person to have, the left footer from that spot. He rarely misses from there. Yeah, I think the immediate thing is we - I think it was Will Hayward took a great mark in the defensive goal square. Probably with that stage of the game maybe we wouldn’t have kicked it there. There are a few things. But it’s unfair to cherry-pick the last couple of minutes without looking at the overall game. I think that the thing that will be difficult to swallow over the next couple of days is the fact we had control of the game and we were out-playing them and couldn’t put the nail in the coffin.
Q: You did reference Cameron’s mark, or non-mark, in the last few seconds of the game. What did you think, do you think it travelled the 15m?
A: I looked at the vision it’s clear it did. It’s a different perspective for the umpire. You can’t go back and replay the vision. They’re tough calls. The deliberate out of bounds. You have to show sufficient intent to keep it in. That’s a hard call as well. There’s pressure on everyone. I think that - I suspect they will have a look at it and go the Swans made some blues early, the Cats made some blues after that and that’s the game unfortunately.

Somehow we got over the line: Florent
Oliver Florent was one of Sydney’s best with 26 disposals (six contested), five marks, four clearances, seven inside 50s, seven score involvements, 645 metres gained, a goal assist and two goals.
Q: Congratulations. That was a good win.
A: It was. Emotions are high at the minute. Credit to the boys for getting it done.
Q: What did John Longmire say at quarter-time? Because they had complete control of game. I think they had 45 marks in that first quarter. When they get that, you know, you are just doing a lot of defending. Is that something you wanted to fix up at quarter-time?
A: Absolutely. We knew that we were losing the contested ball. They were chipping it around a fair bit which was - using a fair bit of energy, to take them away from them in the last three quarters paid dividends.
Q: So many new faces in this this Sydney outfit. Dane Rampe we have seen for so long Buddy Franklin for so long. It’s the new breed that have done so much. Hayden McLean kicked four goals, Chad Warner doing plenty of damage. Must be satisfying for guys that haven’t been at this level before for so long?
A: Definitely. We have a great group of young boys led by the leaders of our club. We expect them to come in and play a role. They’re not being gifted games. They are genuine guns. I love them and doing very well.
Q: What about Tom McCartin down back taking on Tom Hawkins. He’s flourished quickly as a key defender. You must be thrilled with how he’s going?
A: His determination on and off the field. He’s such a reliable key defender. We back him to beat anyone. He’s putting his hand up and stepping up to be one of the best key defenders in the comp.
