St Kilda coach Brett Ratten spoke to the media after the game...
Q: How do you explain a performance like that?
A: Well, you can’t, can you, really? When you think eight days ago they played Geelong, and a lot of the things we wanted to do was on display. The gap between the best and worst is just unacceptable. To think that we kept Geelong to 45 inside 50s but the Bulldogs get 69, our pressure was enormous against Geelong, but really we got out-tackled by about 24. And they won contested possessions by about 11. They won the ball, and they got it back off us, so, yeah, it is unacceptable. And we have got to do something about it. We can’t just keep going with this. A good quarter here or there, players who aren’t performing, they will have to go back to the twos. We have players in pretty good form in the reserves and we will have to make changes, because we can’t have that.
Q: Are these guys on notice for that reason? Have you relayed the message that it is time for change and it is coming now?
A: Yep, they were told that post-game, around some of the gaps between their best and their worst. You know, that affects the team as well. Yeah, we spoke about that.
Q: And how many changes though can you make? Because obviously you can’t offload six and bring six in, or can you? Is that how drastic it has to be to turn things around?
A: No, Luke Dunstan has been in good form. There are a few blokes stringing games together and playing good. They’ll be talked about during the week, but we can’t have a performance like that as a footy club. Eight days ago, win, lose or draw, you would hold your head up high. After that, you don’t know where to look, and we can’t have that. It is a tough game, AFL, but you just can’t drop off the face of the Earth and have a performance like that.
Q: What sort of response were you getting from them in the breaks?
A: The half-time one I thought, you know, they just dominated clearances. We were minus 10 at clearances, and some of the work we did - we got our hands on the ball. Plus 37 in possession for the day but minus in clearances. Their ability to strip us and us not to be stronger and harder in the contest, it is a credit to them. And they have a midfield that bats deep, but we just squandered some opportunities where we could have maybe put them under pressure. I thought the half-time one, maybe at three-quarter time, we were just hanging in here. It has all gone against us. It is not our day. You start to think about yourself as well. But I thought at half-time, we got blown away in the second but I thought they were responding okay.
