A finish that had to be seen to be believed

Oskar Baker etched his name in Adelaide Oval folklore and upstaged Izak Rankine by matching the Crows superstar’s goal for the ages with a piece of magic of his own to hand the Western Bulldogs a heart-stopping win.

Rankine, well held for much of the night in his return from suspension, put Adelaide in front – after they had trailed by 25 points in the fourth quarter – with a brilliant goal from the scoreboard pocket, called to play on and running around Marcus Bontempelli.

Rankine’s brilliance came soon after Luke Pedlar’s go-ahead goal was denied after teammate Ben Keays was called for below-the-knees contact after diving headfirst into Michael Sellwood.

Then Baker, in the opposite south-western pocket, conjured a miracle of his own to somehow outmatch Rankine’s major, taking the ball from the hands of teammate Aaron Naughton and slotting through a stunner from the white paint.

The Crows’ nail-biting defeat was further marred by another hamstring injury to boom recruit Callum Ah Chee, who moments earlier conjured a magnificent spoil on Lachie Jaques to set up a Jordan Dawson goal and effectively launch Adelaide’s fightback.

He hobbled off clutching his right hamstring high after overstretching it in an attempt to reel in Bailey Williams.

The Crows had spent much of the evening chipping the ball around the back half without speed or purpose, the Bulldogs’ tacklers forcing – and feasting on – inevitable cough-ups.

Implausibly, Crows backmen Jordon Butts (10 marks), Nick Murray (eight) and Josh Worrell (eight) combined for as many marks (26) as the entire Bulldogs side at half-time.

Adelaide had to change things up, and they did. Their midfield, swallowed whole early, slowly matched the Dogs’ engine room, then went past them fleetingly.

The Bulldogs started powerfully, finished with class and were the better side for all but 20 minutes. They deserve to remain unbeaten.

The Crows, the authors of their own demise for the first half, showed what they were capable of when they decided to chance their arm, ultimately turning what looked to be a routine defeat into an instant Friday night classic.

Nicks says Crows must attack faster

By Roy Ward

Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks will put his side’s attacking play under the microscope after their loss to the Bulldogs tonight.

The Crows struggled to regularly create attacking chances against a staunch Dogs defence, before an explosion of goals in the final term that briefly put them ahead until Oskar Baker’s late goal snatched the win for the visitors.

Nicks said the Crows would look closely at how they can attack more consistently.

“That’s what we are going to have to work through this week,” Nicks said.

Bevo will take the points, but says the Bulldogs have work to do

Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge will happily take the win, but he’s refusing to let his players consider themselves contenders, despite their 3-0 start to the season.

Beveridge told media post-game that the league was still sorting itself out, and it wasn’t clear yet where the Dogs really stood in the premiership race.

“I’ll take the win any day of the week,” Beveridge said.

“I think both teams behind closed doors will say it was a pretty messy game with a lot of pressure.

Freijah loses voice but will take the four points

By Roy Ward

With his voice almost gone, Dogs star Joel Freijah admits it blew out as he tried to scream over the 50,000-strong Adelaide Oval crowd tonight.

Freijah kicked three goals and had 24 touches in the win while playing as a forward and in the midfield.

“That’s the loudest crowd I’ve played in front of – it was unbelievable,” Freijah told Fox Footy before revealing he lost his voice trying to yell out to his teammates in the final term.

He said he loved the resilience shown by his side in the final term.

Man of the moment Baker praises the Crows

By

Dogs midfielder Oskar Baker has praised his side for their undefeated start to 2026 and their gutsy win over Adelaide in the final minutes tonight.

The Dogs are 3-0 heading into a bye next round with Baker’s late goal from the boundary making sure of the win.

“I’m just so proud of the boys. Adelaide fought back really hard, and it looked like they had all the momentum, but for us to stem the flow, go back at them and get away with the win is a bloody good feeling,” Baker told Fox Footy.

“I’m so stoked.

“It’s an awesome start. We’ve beaten some bloody good teams. We will refresh over the break and hit the ground running after the bye.”
