Mitchell deflects criticism of Merrett saga

By

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell has batted away criticism of his decision to meet with contracted Essendon captain Zach Merrett.

The Hawks became engulfed in the Merrett storm on Wednesday amid revelations that Mitchell had met with Merrett face-to-face the previous night.

It prompted a stern response from Bombers coach Brad Scott, who hit out at Mitchell and declared “the gloves are off”.

But the Hawthorn coach appeared relaxed when asked about it in the bowels of the Adelaide Oval following a famous finals win.

“I’m not going to get into any details but our playing group ... I couldn’t have prepared any better for this game, that’s what I would say,” Mitchell said.

“My job is to win as many games as I can as coach of this club and to improve this club in any way I see fit, so I will continue to do that.”

Merrett’s decision to meet with Mitchell despite having two years left on his contract has prompted criticism from not only his coach but two of his teammates, Mason Redman and Nic Martin.

“From my point of view, the initial thought is disappointment. Irrespective of the injury issues we’ve had this year, which derailed our on-field progress, I feel like off-field we were really making some inroads into making the club a great place to be around,” Redman told AFL.com.au on Thursday.

“It’s [a feeling of] disappointment that our captain, who is supposed to be leading us through this, is exploring other options.”

Martin, meantime, was responding to earlier comments that Scott’s relationship with the playing group had become strained. But, he too was concerned with the optics of Merrett meeting with an opposition coach.

“My first reaction was hurt from it, and I was disappointed and a little bit angry about it but then again Zach is my teammate, so I think I have got a job to try to understand his perspective and what he is going through, but I was bitterly hurt from it,” Martin told this masthead.

“We are going to have to build the bridge again.”

Essendon have staunchly maintained Merrett will not be traded under any circumstances, but he is expected to push harder for a move out of Tullamarine in the coming weeks.

What a night, what a result

Thanks for joining us tonight for a momentous result for Hawthorn.

The tone for the victory was set in the first two minutes when the ruthless Hawks, driven by midfield bull Jai Newcombe, poured in a quickfire three goals. It was uphill work from there for Adelaide.

It has undoubtedly been a desperately disappointing finals campaign for the Crows, especially given that the minor premiers didn’t win a quarter during their two finals matches. They can only hope it stiffens their resolve for years to come.

We’ll be back tomorrow with comprehensive coverage of Saturday’s QClash semi-final and then next week, a blockbuster weekend of two MCG preliminary finals – the stakes only getting higher from there.

Thanks, and good night.

Gunston torments the club that drafted him

By

Evergreen goal-kicking machine Jack Gunston tormented the club that first unleashed him on the AFL stage, extending Hawthorn’s fairytale run from eighth into a preliminary final while consigning Adelaide to a dismal straight-sets exit.

The Crows had no answer for Gunston, whose vintage five-goal bag took his season tally to 70 – remarkably, the best of his 16-year career.

Drafted by Adelaide way back in 2009, Gunston fell homesick after 20 games and was traded to the Hawks, where he has gone on to become a club great since, save for one year at the Brisbane Lions in 2023.

‘They have the belief’: Gunston pumps up the new Hawthorn brigade

By Scott Spits

Evergreen forward Jack Gunston says the young Hawthorn brigade possess immense self-belief and have noticeably different traits to Hawks teams of old.

A decade after Gunston played in the third of three straight premierships with Hawthorn – flag triumphs he shared with players of the ilk of Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell and Jarryd Roughead – the veteran star played a pivotal role in driving the brown and gold to their first preliminary final since 2015.

As a 33-year-old in his 16th season at the top level, Gunston booted 5.3 against Adelaide at Adelaide Oval in a virtual best on ground performance. Few teammates clearly surpassed him.

“They have the belief – they definitely have the belief and, these young guys, they don’t feel pressure,” Gunston told Fox Footy, speaking about his younger Hawthorn teammates who have lifted the club to another finals showdown against Geelong.

“They ride the wave and they just enjoy it. Nothing fazes them, which is awesome.”

The mighty, fighting Hawks make history

The Giant-slaying Hawks have booted an inept Adelaide out of the finals with their tails between their legs in a stunning 34-point semi-final demolition at Adelaide Oval.

The Crows were left wallowing in unwanted history, becoming the first minor premier to be bundled out of the major round in straight sets since North Melbourne in 1983.

Needless to say, the result was the first-ever time an eighth-placed side has knocked off the top-ranked team in any final.

Siren! What a finals win by Hawthorn

By Scott Spits

Victory for Hawthorn. That was an absolutely epic finals performance.

Adelaide were expected to give more than a sniff in the last quarter, but it simply didn’t happen. The Crows become the first minor premiers since North Melbourne in 1983 to go out in straight sets.

The Hawks reach their first preliminary final in a decade – their first since 2015 which was, of course, a flag year for them.

Next week (Friday night) it’s Geelong versus Hawthorn in yet another finals showdown. Bring it on.

FINAL: Hawthorn 14.17 (101) d. Adelaide 10.7 (67)

A late goal to the Crows

Jake Soligo snags one. It came with nearly 28 minutes on the clock, but it doesn’t matter now.
