And that’s where we’ll leave our live coverage of the 2022 federal election.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison concedes defeat: “I as leader take responsibility for the wins and the losses.”James Brickwood

We’ll be back on Sunday with our continuing rolling coverage, which you can find here and in the link below, amid uncertainty surrounding whether Anthony Albanese will form government in his own right or as head of a minority government, reliant on the support of the Greens and teal independents.

We’ll leave you with Peter Hartcher’s comment piece. He writes, of Scott Morrison: “he was a bulldozer, all right. He bulldozed his party into electoral oblivion.”

Liberals need quotas says Pyne

By

Christopher Pyne has said the Liberal party is going to have to look at adopting quotas to get more women into Parliament.

Female teal independents clinched key Liberal seats including Kooyong, Goldstein, Warringah, Mackellar, North Sydney and Wentworth.

Pyne told 7 there was a clear message from the Liberals’ defeat.

“The Liberal Party can’t afford to lose women. We don’t have enough women,” Pyne said.

“We’re going to have to start looking at quotas. We’re going to have to start facing the reality.”

”You heard it here first, it’s a swear word for the Liberal Party” said Labor Senator and fellow panellist Katy Gallagher quipped.

Plibersek on Labor victory: “a win is a win is a win”

By Latika Bourke

Labor frontbencher Tanya Plibersek says a win is a win, despite Labor’s weakened primary vote at this election.

Labor’s primary is two per cent lower than it was at the last election as voters who rejected Scott Morrison favoured the Greens and independents.

But Plibersek told the ABC that “a win is a win is a win”.

“I don’t think anybody is complaining about the primary vote ... I think this is a really strong signal that people in city areas, in regional communities, right across Australia are up for strong action on climate change.”

Liberal Minister Ken Wyatt loses Hasluck

By Sarah Brookes

Indigenous Affairs Minister Ken Wyatt has lost his West Australian seat of Hasluck.

A small crowd of supporters gathered at his election night event at the Crooked Spire in Midland but he was not expected to arrive until later in the evening.

Hasluck was one of three seats Labor set its sights on in WA that was held by the Liberals by less than six per cent.

Labor’s candidate for the seat, Tania Lawrence, said she was very proud to be able to work with an experienced Labor team in parliament.

“People have been saying to me, they’re angry, they’re frustrated. They’ve expressed all their major issues. And I feel that Labor has listened. And our policies have responded to what they’ve said to me.”

Wyatt had held the seat since 2010.
