Prime Minister Anthony Albanese appointed former university vice-chancellor Glyn Davis as the new secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet after Morrison-appointee Phil Gaetjens stepped down from the role after the election.

New Liberal deputy leader Sussan Ley said the party would review its policies regarding women. “We hear you. We’re listening. We’re talking. And we are determined to earn back your trust and your faith,” she said.

Labor eyes off savings to bring budget under control: Please Explain

The new Labor government could cut or wind back billions of dollars worth of infrastructure projects promised by the Coalition, as it tries to bring the budget under control.

Labor has inherited a forecast deficit of $80 billion this financial year, while gross debt is on track to reach $1.2 trillion within three years.

In the frame are more than $20 billion in infrastructure projects promised by the Coalition during the election campaign, which haven’t been vetted by Infrastructure Australia.

Senators describe Dutton as ‘very effective’, ‘divisive’

Liberal Senator Hollie Hughes and Greens Senator Dorinda Cox have gone head-to-head over the Liberal Party’s election of Peter Dutton as its new leader.

While Hughes described Dutton as “very effective”, Cox said he would “continue his divisive nature”.

“I’ve known him for about 15 years and perhaps his public persona versus what he’s like in private is very, very [different],” Hughes told ABC’s Afternoon Briefing.

“He’s someone who was always very effective, very supportive whenever I went to him with an issue, something that had to be dealt with ... he’s very effective.

‘We will work together’: how politicians responded to new Liberal, National leaders

Peter Dutton was elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party unopposed earlier today, and Sussan Ley was elected as his deputy. The National Party also elected a new leader, David Littleproud. Here’s what some of their colleagues had to say:

I think they’ll do an outstanding job and I look forward to giving them all of my full support.

It was a good opportunity for me to thank my colleagues for their great loyalty and support over these past more than 3.5 years, and to do that both on my behalf as well as on behalf of my dear friend Josh Frydenberg, who we’re all very sad couldn’t be with us today, and there was a rousing cheer for Josh, as there should be.

And so to him and to all the Liberal Party supporters, and those out there, thank you very much.

It’s been a great privilege to lead the Federal Parliamentary Liberal Party, and I hand it over to Peter and Sussan and wish them all the very best.

ASX 200 up 1.45 per cent

A strong lead from Wall St triggered a broad market rally on the ASX 200 which closed at its high point for the day, up 1.45 per cent to 7,286.6.

Every sector finished the day higher aside from the utilities sector which appeared to take a hit from AGL’s failed attempt to de-merge its coal power plants from the rest of its business.

The tech sector led the gains with a rise of 4.6 per cent, followed by the materials sector with our iron ore and gold miners doing well.

Market heavyweight BHP closed 2.8 per cent higher.

Barnaby Joyce ‘not really’ sad about being replaced as National Party leader

Outgoing National Party leader Barnaby Joyce has released a statement saying he is not sad about the party’s decision to elect David Littleproud as its new leader.

“Well I suppose you think I’m sad. Not really,” Joyce said in a video posted online.

“I gave every ounce of my energy to make sure I looked after the people of regional Australia, the people in the small family businesses, the people in the weatherboard and iron, the people on the farms, making sure that we drove the investments to hopefully take their standard of living ahead.”

Glyn Davis named new secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has appointed former university vice-chancellor Glyn Davis to lead his department.

Davis has most recently been chief executive of the Paul Ramsay Foundation and previously led Griffith University and the University of Melbourne. He also headed up Queensland’s Department of Premier and Cabinet from 1998 to 2002.

“Professor Davis will bring to the role of secretary a deep understanding of public policy and will work with my government in bringing about positive change for the Australian people,” Albanese said.

The previous secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Phil Gaetjens, stepped down after the election. He was previously Scott Morrison’s chief of staff and Labor had criticised his appointment to the top job in the public service as politicising the role.

  • Since being elected, Dutton has admitted he made a mistake by not attending the 2008 apology to the Stolen Generations and defended his image, saying “it’s pretty hard to break into a smile” when you’re announcing the deportation of thousands of criminals.
  • Meanwhile, the Liberal’s new deputy leader Sussan Ley has told women the party is “determined to earn back your trust and your faith”.

As regular readers of this blog will know, the Liberals lost several inner-city seats to socially progressive female independents at the recent election.

“I will continue to be a strong voice for women,” Ley said.

“We know that we didn’t receive the support of all women at the last election, and my message to the women of Australia is ‘we hear you. We’re listening. We’re talking. And we are determined to earn back your trust and your faith’.”

I made a mistake in boycotting Stolen Generations apology, Dutton says

To policy specifics now, and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has been asked if he will support the Uluru Statement of the Heart given he’s talked up Australia’s Indigenous history.

During his response, the Liberal leader admitted he made a mistake by not attending the 2008 apology to the Stolen Generations.

I made a mistake in relation to the apology and largely that was because of my own background and experience. Many of you have lived out in regional areas and many of you haven’t. I worked in Townsville [as a police officer]. I remember going to many domestic violence incidents, particularly involving Indigenous communities, and, for me at the time, I believed that the apology should be given when the problems were resolved. And the problems are not resolved. There are little boys and girls in parts of our country in 2022, in this year, that slept in a shipping container last night to get through the hours of darkness in Indigenous communities and it’s completely unacceptable.

Earlier, new Nationals leader David Littleproud was asked whether his party would now support an Indigenous Voice to parliament given he was talking up diversity and the “sensible centre”.
