A man has been charged after he allegedly tried to abduct a seven-week-old baby from Bronte Beach in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

Police said a 31-year-old mother was at the beach with her baby lying on a towel beside her at 6pm on Monday when the man who was unknown to her walked up and tried to grab the child.
