What causes the fog?

Grace woke to find her grandmother standing at the open front door.

“Wow,” Grace said, seeing fog shrouding the street.

Soon they were outside, exploring the eerie stillness, familiar landmarks now ghostly apparitions.

“What causes it, Nan?” Grace asked, water droplets like diamonds on her lashes.

Vera used to know but, like so much else, she’d forgotten. She’d probably forget this, too, her and Grace floating through the clouds together.

“We’ll look it up when we get home,” she said finally.

“But let’s not go home yet,” Grace said.

“Let’s not, love,” agreed Vera, and they ventured on, hand in hand.
