Burrup traditional owners expect ‘equal footing’ in future decisions

The boss of the Aboriginal corporation representing the traditional owners of Murujuga, also known as the Burrup Peninsula, home to some of has signalled he expects governments and industry to agree to remove the current block on traditional owners objecting to industrial development.

The Burrup Peninsula is home to extensive and world renowned Indigenous rock art.

It is also home to expanding Woodside operations, Norway’s Yara, ammonia maker Perdaman and Rio Tinto’s main iron ore export port.

On Monday, WAtoday reported that Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation’s chief executive Kim Wood had told senate inquiry that despite members’ opposition to industry expansion, they didn’t “have the ability to say no.”

Peter Brock Holden goes under the hammer

The 1991 VN Group A touring car driven by Australian racing legend Peter Brock will hit the auction block this weekend alongside its original limited build predecessor.

These legendary vehicles played a significant role in Australian motorsport and the Australian Touring Car Championship.

The demand for Brock memorabilia, especially his cars, remains higher than ever, further driving up prices with collectors eager to secure a part of his legacy.

Two WA construction companies fined $500,000 over safety breaches

A WA construction company has been fined nearly half a million dollars over breaches in the health and safety laws, after a concrete staircase collapsed on top of one of its workers.

Merym Pty Ltd (trading as EMCO Building) was found guilty of failing to provide and maintain a safe workplace and, by that failure, causing serious harm and was fined $450,000, and ordered to pay $35,000 in costs, in the Perth Magistrates Court last week.

In April 2019, Merym was the principal contractor engaged for construction of a secondary school in Alkimos where a worker suffered serious injuries when a concrete staircase collapsed on him.

Bricklayers employed by Swinging Bricklayers Pty Ltd, a subcontractor of Merym, had removed steel props that were supporting the staircase to construct a load bearing wall under the recently formed concrete stairs.

Investigators descend on Fremantle over The Leeuwin crash

An update for you now on the damage to The Leeuwin from Fremantle Port Authority’s chief executive Jody Ransom.

The 332-metre Maersk container ship crashed into the beloved local institution at the port while coming in to berth on Friday morning, leaving the tall ship de-masted, with two workers who were aboard rushed to hospital.

Ransom says the bow struck the Leeuwin, the stern hit a berth and the edge of the roof of the Maritime Museum.

She was waiting for updates on the Leeuwin’s injured crew members but believed their injuries were non-life threatening.

The Maersk vessel is now berthed and authorities are assessing the harbour for damage or hazardous debris.

Australian Nursing Federation secretary Janet Reah quits

Australian Nursing Federation WA state secretary Janet Reah has announced her resignation effective immediately.

Reah said she wanted to thank members for the support they had shown over the past two years.

“It has been my privilege to have represented them during one of the most tumultuous times in the ANF’s history,” she said.

“However, after great consideration I have decided to resign from my positions as ANF IUWP and ANMF WA Branch Secretary.

Details emerge of death at ‘one of world’s worst child prisons’

We now have updates for you on the death by suicide at the notorious Banksia Hill juvenile detention facility.

The state’s Premier Roger Cook said he wanted to acknowledge the youth’s friends and family as well as the staff and first responders confronted with “such a traumatic event.”

Police have not yet been able to speak with the 17-year-old boy’s parents.

The true impact of Daisy Pearce’s arrival at the Eagles

Sometimes West Coast captain Emma Swanson has to remind herself she’s not competing with Daisy Pearce anymore.

Pearce, the former Melbourne star and now first-year Eagles coach, will lead West Coast in Friday’s season opener against Richmond at Mineral Resources Park.

Swanson and Pearce were Demons teammates in the early women’s exhibition games. They became AFLW midfield adversaries when Swanson played for GWS, then West Coast.

“I’m pretty competitive, so I had to park that and convince myself she’s not the opposition anymore,” Swanson said.

Teen takes own life at Perth’s Banksia Hill

A youth has taken their own life inside Banksia Hill Detention Centre, according to reports.

It is believed the 17-year-old fatally self-harmed overnight.

St John WA confirmed paramedics rushed to the Canning Vale facility just after 10pm on Thursday.

WA Day has been rescheduled

WA Day will now be held at Burswood Park on Sunday, November 24, after being rained out in June, the government will announce today.

The free one-day festival will feature all the same bells and whistles – major drone show, fireworks, live music, carnival rides and food trucks.

The full music line-up is yet to be confirmed.

There will be free public transport to and from the event that day.

It will be held alongside The West Test between Australia and India at Optus Stadium, with more “activations” planned for that precinct.
