Garbage truck forced to dump burning rubbish in East Fremantle

By Indigo Lemay-Conway

A roadside garbage fire in East Fremantle yesterday has acted as a reminder for people to not throw their used batteries in the bin.

A Veolia garbage truck collecting a recycling load was forced to empty its trailer contents onto the carpark floor at Henry Jeffrey Oval after the driver became aware it was on fire.

Cook rules out forced amalgamation of WA councils

By Hamish Hastie

Premier Roger Cook says WA councils need to merge but ruled out forced amalgamations following a Housing Industry Association breakfast in Perth on Friday morning.

During the breakfast Cook said the council mergers needed to happen.

When asked for clarification during a press conference after the breakfast, Cook confirmed the comment but was quick to say there would be no forced amalgamations, which the Barnett government attempted and failed in the middle of the last decade.

“There’ll be no forced amalgamations, but we continue to work with the local government sector around their aspirations to continue to reform and provide strong representation to their communities,” he said.

Cook said it was realistic that councils would voluntarily merge, but conceded there was always community opposition.

King pushes World Cup claim in T20 recall

By Scott Bailey

WA’s Alana King has staked her claim to be in Australia’s Twenty20 World Cup side, taking three wickets to help bowl her side to victory against the West Indies.

After Beth Mooney’s 79 helped lift Australia to 6-164 in St Vincent, King claimed 3-14 from four overs of leg spin to keep the hosts to 6-121 in reply.

Controversially overlooked for Australia’s T20 squad this home summer against India, King took her chance in the team’s last tour before June’s World Cup.

Brought back into the side with captain Sophie Molineux rested from bowling on her return from back soreness, King was easily Australia’s best with the ball.

Fans urged to arrive early as AFL returns to WA

By

The West Coast Eagles and the Fremantle Dockers are encouraging fans to arrive early for this weekend’s AFL matches as Optus Stadium’s new SafeTix system is implemented for the first time this season.

SafeTix is an enhanced digital ticketing system designed to increase security and prevent fraud, which is mandatory for all major events at the stadium, including the 2026 AFL season.

Both teams will host matches at Optus this weekend with Fremantle to face Melbourne on Saturday and West Coast to take on North Melbourne on Sunday.

It is the first time the two sides have had an opportunity to play in front of local fans this season.

West Coast and Fremantle were not a part of the league’s Opening Round, while both sides played away matches last weekend due to the scheduling of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

The WA sides were not the only teams to wait until Round 2 to play a home game, with Adelaide and Port Adelaide also playing their first matches away due to a cricket scheduling conflict at Adelaide Oval.

Budget funding to support subsidies for a further 350 apprentices and trainees

By Hamish Hastie

The WA government will extend a program to increase apprentice and trainee uptake at small and medium-sized businesses with a $19.6 million injection included in the upcoming May budget.

The group training organisation wage subsidy program has already supported 1000 apprentices and trainees since its inception in 2022, and the new round of funding will support a further 330.

Of those placements, the wages of 205 apprentices and trainees will be subsidised at 50 per cent, 75 places at 75 per cent and a further 50 places for women in electrical trades will be subsidised at 75 per cent.

“Often the barrier for GTOs and small businesses is the cost of having an apprentice for four years,” Training Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said.

Regions to be prioritised as fuel flows into WA

By Hamish Hastie

Energy Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson says there has been a 174 per cent increase in fuel flowing from ports into the state, which would help restock independent suppliers at the end of the supply chain in areas including the Goldfields and Great Southern.

Fuel supply in regional areas had been a major headache for the Cook government as agricultural regions gear up for seeding and smaller mining companies fear fuel supply interruptions will impact operations.

“That extra volume will be prioritised to get out to those regional areas where we’ve seen that restocking issue, Kalgoorlie and the Goldfields as a priority, the Wheatbelt, Great Southern and the South West,” Sanderson said on Friday morning.

The WA government has the power to place caps on fuel prices, but Sanderson said this would not help households.

“I think this has been pretty well ventilated, the price cap would essentially, at this point, ensure that everyone raises their price to that cap, then you’d lose that competitive tension that the transparency of FuelWatch provides,” she said.

“We think the settings are right at this point, but nothing’s off the table, and we’re watching it very carefully.”
