Allen meeting with another coach – a day after he was kept goalless and had just four disposals in the Eagles’ loss to Fremantle – appears a bad look on the surface.

But Pyke indicated the Eagles were unfazed.

“It’s obviously news to us that that may have occurred,” Pyke told SEN radio in WA.

“But I think we’re working in a world now that’s changed from times gone past.

“I don’t think it’s unusual for clubs to meet with players and if that is the case, then clearly we’ll keep talking with Oscar about his position at the club.

“We’d love to obviously keep him here and we’re working towards that with him and his management.

“That came to bear overnight, I guess, and we’ll work through that as we do with everything.”

Pyke wouldn’t be drawn on whether, as co-captain, Allen should speak to his teammates about his meeting with Mitchell.

The 26-year-old has also reportedly attracted interest from the Brisbane Lions, Collingwood and Melbourne.

The Eagles are desperate to keep their home-grown captain, who is a superb key forward at his best but has been affected by injuries.

“Both parties would like to get a deal done and that’s always a good start when you’re negotiating something,” Pyke said.

“If Oscar wants to be here, we’d love Oscar to be here. It’s really just down to those terms and we’ve been in communication with Oscar and his management for a while on that.”

Fiannaca , who observed Rebelo during his trial, said he told “elaborate lies” and was not a credible witness.

“You gave evidence that you applied for the life insurance policies in your mother’s name because she asked you to, [but] she was educated and able to [do it herself],” he said.

Fiannaca said Colleen Rebelo, 58, was in a good state of mind before she died, and had recently obtained a new position on a medical board after completing a university degree.

Rebelo, who began trading cryptocurrency three years before his mother’s death, portrayed himself as a knowledgeable trader, even publishing a guide, the judge told the court. He told his girlfriend Grace Piscopo that he was making large sums of money when in reality, he had made close to nothing.

As the couple created a false, carefully curated image online of a luxurious lifestyle, Rebelo was hiding his growing debt and inability to pay his bills.

Fiannaca said that is when he formulated the plan to take out multiple life insurance policies worth $1.15 million in his mother’s name, and murder her to claim those policies.

“You began making email accounts in mother’s name,” he said. “There’s no credible evidence you mother ever became aware of them.

“You provided the address to your house, you specified yourself as the sole beneficiary.”

Moving to the day Colleen Rebelo was found dead in the shower of her Bicton home, Fiannaca has recalled how Rebelo’s younger brother discovered his mother naked, with her jewellery and make-up on, slumped in the shower. Her cause of death was never determined.

The sentencing is continuing.
