Mitchell Freeway reopens after police incident

Hannah Murphy

Emergency services are under the pump this weekend with a number of fatal crashes and incidents on WA’s roads.

Main Roads WA said on Sunday afternoon it had reopened the Mitchell Freeway northbound after an incident in the early hours of the morning.

Police say a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle northbound on Mitchell Freeway, near the Cedric Street overpass, at about 3 o’clock in the morning.

Major Crash officers extended the closure throughout Sunday to investigate the scene, forcing motorists to use the Cedric Street off-ramp northbound despite it previously being closed for construction.

Traffic was reduced to a single lane from about nine o’clock in the morning, and cars were banked up as far back as Leederville.

It took vehicles about 40 minutes to move between just after Glendalough Train Station and Cedric Street near Innaloo.

St John’s Ambulance, police and Main Roads WA all attended, and the closure forced motorists down side roads into Innaloo and Stirling, with police managing the flow of cars towards the coast.

Police said they were also called to another fatal crash that killed two men this weekend.

Officers said they were called to Miling in the Shire of Moora in the early hours of Saturday morning.
