‘I was in disbelief’: Teenager still traumatised years after girlfriend’s mum stabbed him

A teenager who was stabbed by his girlfriend’s mother says he remains traumatised two years on from the attack.

In his first interview since the attack, the now-16-year-old told 9News Perth he struggled to eat and sleep and had lost friends since he was repeatedly stabbed by Jennifer Mui Len Chin.

The highschool student said he had also lost his love of playing basketball and lived in fear of his attacker.

“[I’ve] been more stressed out, like, looking over my shoulder,” he said.

“I was in shock, I was in disbelief, I had like a flight-or-fight response.

“I was definitely scared for sure, I was intimidated by her.”

Chin was found guilty by a jury last month of causing harm with intent.

The trial heard she discovered the then-14-year-old hiding under a blanket after her daughter snuck the boy into their Parkwood home.

The mother-of-two argued she thought the boy was an intruder and told her six-year-old son to get a knife from the kitchen, before stabbing the teen to protect her family.

However, the jury disagreed and convicted her of the offence.

Prosecutors told the court Chin stabbed the boy “to teach him a lesson”, and was angry because she didn’t allow her 14-year-old daughter to have a boyfriend.

The boy testified as a key witness during the week-long trial.

“I was really scared and anxious about going through cross-examination”, he told 9News Perth.

“I had an overwhelming feeling of dread.”

The teenager is looking to leave the traumatic event behind him and said he wanted to finish school and start an apprenticeship as an electrician, with the goal of working on mine sites in WA.

“It’s been a big journey, and I’ve felt proud of what I’ve become now and how far I’ve come from that day,” he said.

Jennifer Chin was set to learn her fate in Perth’s District Court on Wednesday, however her sentencing was delayed until November.
