In an emotional address, Mr Martin’s wife Amanda broke down in tears as she recounted some of her fondest memories with her partner and his sense of humour.

"I never thought this day would come that I would be without my Nick," she told attendees, fighting back the tears.

"I don't know how I will go on."

"I'm going to miss my trifle this year," she said before saying a few words on behalf of her mother.

She described Mr Martin's presence "physically and in character" merely by entering a room.

"He was loyal to those he loved," she said, but according to his mother's account "never did what he was told".

Ms James admitted to being "nervous" meeting Mr Martin and his wife Amanda, who he chased for seven months before she agreed to go out with him.

She said he was a "focused and direct" and what you would describe as a "tough bastard" who "adored the women in his life".
