Today’s developments at a glance

By Broede Carmody

And that’s where we’ll leave our live coverage for the day.

If you’re just joining us, here were the key developments in Victorian state politics:

  • Premier Daniel Andrews promised to spend $30 million on small-scale producers and farmers if Labor is re-elected on Saturday. The package would include grants for aspiring gin and whisky distillers.
  • Opposition Leader Matthew Guy has released what he’s described as the most comprehensive policy agenda any opposition has ever brought to a Victorian election. “Please give us your trust,” he told undecided voters during today’s press conference.
  • The Nationals candidate found dead in bushland on Sunday afternoon was facing rape and sexual assault charges. Party leader Peter Walsh has denied previously knowing about those allegations.
  • The Liberal Party has put flyers in Hawthorn and Kew letterboxes saying a vote for a teal independent candidate is a vote to re-elect the Andrews government. The teals say the Liberals only have themselves to blame if they don’t win government on Saturday.
  • Labor defended its right to label far-right candidates “Nazis”. The party also hit out at the Liberals for preferencing someone who has made seemingly anti-Semitic posts on social media higher than the Labor candidate in Narre Warren South.
  • Former upper house Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury says this is an “election of extremes” and his former party is drifting too far to the right.
  • And Reason Party leader Fiona Patten, who is fighting to retain her upper house seat in the Northern Metropolitan region, says she has seen some “fairly aggressive” behaviour at early voting centres.

Tomorrow’s election blog will be up and running just before 9am.

Have a lovely evening.

Labor’s liquor licence plan criticised

By Sophie Aubrey

Some residents have lashed out at a Labor plan to end the freeze on late-night liquor licences in inner-city councils, arguing it risks making their suburbs unlivable due to noise and antisocial behaviour.

On Saturday, Daniel Andrews announced that, if re-elected, Labor would pour $34 million into Victoria’s music industry and end a 14-year freeze on new liquor licences being granted to venues which would allow them to serve alcohol after 1am.

Chapel Street is home to numerous bars and apartments.

The state government introduced the freeze in 2008 in the municipalities of Stonnington, Yarra, Port Phillip and Melbourne – with only a few exemptions since then – to help curb alcohol-fuelled violence and boost safety.

Rafael Camillo, president of group Residents 3000, said he felt blindsided by Andrews’ plan.

Letterbox war escalates in Melbourne’s inner east

By Clay Lucas

Competition for the state seats of Hawthorn and Kew is heating up, with the Liberal Party putting flyers in letterboxes in the electorates saying a vote for a teal independent candidate is a vote to re-elect the Andrews government.

Flyers produced by the Liberal Party, and sent to this masthead today by teal supporters, warn voters in the electorates that electing an independent “helps re-elect Daniel Andrews for a second decade”.

The reverse side of the flyer tells voters: “Don’t wake up this Sunday with a Daniel Andrews hangover. Vote Liberal.”

It is one of the first times the Liberals have openly attacked teal candidates in the state election.

Andrews targets aspiring distillers in latest policy announcement

By Nicole Precel

Meanwhile, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has promised that, if re-elected, a Labor government will spend $30 million over four years to promote small-scale producers and farmers.

Speaking from Brown Brothers Winery in the north-east of Victoria, Andrews said the package would include $2 million worth of grants to support small agribusinesses and $5 million for a “wine to the world” program, which would include a new Victorian wine strategy.

The package would also include $10 million to support Victorian distilleries to establish and upgrade their facilities.

Andrews said there were about 120 distilleries across the state, “and we would see those numbers grow, we want to send even more whiskey to the world”.

‘A five is a five’: Guy defends Liberal how-to-vote card

By Broede Carmody and Paul Sakkal

If you’ve been following state politics closely today, you’d know that Labor and the Coalition have been arguing about the use of the term “Nazi” to describe far-right candidates.

This morning, deputy Liberal leader David Southwick said it’s inappropriate for politicians to throw around the word “loosely”.

In response, Labor has produced evidence of a candidate who has made seemingly anti-Semitic posts on social media being preferenced by the Liberal Party ahead of Labor in the seat of Narre Warren South.

Tylere Baker-Pearce is being preferenced in fifth place on the Liberal how-to-vote card in the seat. He has posted a photo of himself on social media smiling outside the Auschwitz concentration camp with a flame emoji.

“Matthew Guy, preferencing neo-Nazis over Labor. Just horrifying,” federal Labor MP Josh Burns, who is Jewish, wrote on Twitter in reference to Baker-Pearce.

Opposition leader asked why Dutton hasn’t campaigned in Victoria

By Broede Carmody

Staying with Matthew Guy’s press conference, and the opposition leader was asked why his federal counterpart – Peter Dutton – hasn’t appeared on the campaign trail.

As mentioned earlier this morning, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited southeast Melbourne today to thank Labor volunteers ahead of another day of early voting.

Here’s what Guy had to say about why Dutton hasn’t held a similar event:

Well, predominantly, as you know, it’s a state election.

No one’s voting for Anthony Albanese or Peter Dutton or anyone else. They’re voting for me.

It should be noted, though, that Dutton did visit Victoria this month to attend the funeral of former federal Victorian MP Peter Reith.

‘Please give us your trust,’ Guy tells undecided voters

By Broede Carmody

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy is currently holding a press conference where he’s implored undecided voters to choose the Coalition on Saturday.

“Please give us your trust,” he said. “Try the Coalition. We’ve got a sensible, reasonable plan for Victoria.”

The comments come as the Coalition launches its “real solutions” plan. Guy describes it as the most comprehensive policy agenda an opposition has ever brought to a Victorian election.

However, the press conference was dominated by questions about the late Nationals’ candidate, Shaun Gilchrist.
