A trail of sparks and damage: Video captures moment ute caused chaos on busy Richmond street

A man has been charged after a banged-up ute careered through Richmond, sending sparks flying.
Footage shows the grey ute speeding down Church Street, the driver’s side wheel badly damaged and the undercarriage grazing the roadway.
Images taken from nearby York Street reveal a chaotic scene, where a maroon sedan was left perched on top of a blue vehicle, its bonnet crumpled after being struck by a ute.
“Multiple calls were received in relation to a car being driven erratically in the Richmond and Collingwood areas around 7pm,” officers said in a statement.
“The driver struck around four vehicles on York Street in Richmond before his car came to a stop. A short foot pursuit ensued, and the man was arrested.”
“No one was injured during the incidents, but multiple vehicles were struck and damaged, the number approximately 10 at this stage.”
On Tuesday evening, police arrested a man believed to have been behind the wheel.
On Wednesday morning, police said a 49-year-old man from Oakleigh had been charged with dangerous driving while being pursued by police, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, criminal damage, and other traffic offences. He has also been charged with possessing a drug of dependence.
He was remanded in custody to appear in court later on Wednesday.
A 57-year-old woman was taken to hospital following the ordeal, suffering non-life threatening injuries after she fell while trying to flee the scene.
