The surprisingly versatile top tackling trans-seasonal fashion woes

Life would be much easier if our wardrobes were like Swiss Army knives, containing solutions to all of life’s major problems. Instead of having separate tools for whittling, opening bottles and cleaning your fingernails, how good would it be if one item could tick all your weekend fashion needs – along with the occasional casual Friday at the office? The rugby top won’t help you assemble a bookcase, but it will work with most trans-seasonal trends while Spring is finding her feet.

Striped collared tops have been a growing trend since 2023 when the combined influences of singer Rihanna and model Hailey Bieber, who were snapped wearing rugby styles from Loewe, made them off-field essentials. They hung around, on and off the runway, and were finally anointed a street-style staple at Copenhagen Fashion Week.

Think of the rugby top as knitwear, only with a more outgoing and athletic personality. Style it with maxi skirts and denim and beneath winter coats for visual interest. Pay close attention to the weight of the cotton. A heavy rugby top will reduce your need for layering, offering enough warmth on its own. If you’re wearing yours to the office or dinner, be sure to elevate your other accessories, such as bags and shoes, so that colleagues and friends know you’re not going to be dropping in at a sports bar later on. Maximise versatility by going up a size and embracing the baggy look; just tuck it in if you’re worried about being swamped by it. Oh, and bonus fashion points for the truly courageous, who’ll carry on wearing it as a dress when the temperature finally starts to rise again.
