Senior One Nation figure charged with fraud over state election funds

A senior One Nation party figure has been charged with fraud, and will face a Queensland court next year, over a funding application made during last year’s state election.

Alex Jones, the 22-year-old national executive treasurer for the party, has been charged with two counts of uttering forged documents and one count each of attempted fraud and forgery.

The police investigation began in January after a referral from the Electoral Commission of Queensland.

Detectives raided a residential address at Hamilton in inner Brisbane and an office address at Holt Street in nearby Eagle Farm on Wednesday morning. Mr Jones lives in Hamilton.

In a text message meant for Mr Jones, but mistakenly sent to Brisbane Times, One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts said: “Hang in there, Alex.”

Text message from Senator Malcolm Roberts received by the journalist.

It will be alleged Mr Jones submitted fraudulent documentation relating to a 2020 election funding application for $24,000.

Mr Jones has been issued with a notice to appear at Brisbane Magistrates Court on February 4, 2022.

One Nation fared particularly badly at the state election, managing only to have Mirani MP Stephen Andrew re-elected after a 6.6 per cent swing against the party.

Comment has been sought from Mr Jones and One Nation.
