Updated ,first published
A teenager is fighting for his life in a Gold Coast hospital after suffering serious head injuries during an alleged assault at Varsity Lakes overnight.
Police have charged a 34-year-old Moggill man over the assault of the 18-year-old and that of a woman who came to the unconscious teenager’s aid.
The woman, a Varsity Lakes local who found the injured man as she walked along Christine Avenue, called Triple Zero from the scene at 10.38pm.
“Upon calling emergency services for assistance, it is alleged the same offender, who had been waiting nearby, then assaulted the woman,” a police spokeswoman said.
“Police arrived at the scene a short time later and took a 34-year-old man into custody. During his arrest, it is further alleged the man spat on a police officer.”
The man has been charged with one count each of grievous bodily harm, the serious assault of a police officer, and common assault.
A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson said the 18-year-old was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a “potentially life-threatening condition”.
The 27-year-old woman who called police was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The accused Moggill man was due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Saturday.
