House next to historic Brisbane cinema goes up in flames

Ten fire crews attended a house fire next to a historic cinema in the riverside suburb of Indooroopilly that caused a nearby apartment building to be evacuated this afternoon.

Firefighters arrived at the house – believed to be abandoned – next to the Eldorado cinema on Coonan Street at 2.20pm.

The fully engulfed house posed a threat to surrounding buildings, including the cinema, a Queensland Fire Department spokesperson said.

Emergency services evacuated a Riverside Terrace apartment building behind the blaze, which was contained before 3pm.

It was not known if anyone had been inside the house. Paramedics and police were also in attendance.

Scientific crews, including those called to fires involving hazardous materials, were also present.

Traffic had been blocked off towards the river by a fire truck, according to someone at the scene.

The house and cinema had been approved for a redevelopment, with apartments, an updated cinema and shopfronts planned for the site, which is owned by Eldorado operators United Cinemas.
