Gold Coast family lend jet-ski to police for Christmas canal chase

Matt Dennien

A Gold Coast family has loaned a jet-ski to a police officer so he could chase a man who was allegedly driving a boat dangerously through the canals.

Police were notified of the man's behaviour in a small boat near Chevron Island about 6am on Christmas morning.

He was followed from land along the waterways and allegedly failed to comply when directed to come ashore.

After he drove into the Broadbeach Waters canal, police spoke to a family who offered to lend their jet-ski to the officer.

Body camera footage shows the officer being handed a life jacket before members of the family push the vehicle away from the pontoon with a "good luck".

He then followed the man to a nearby location where he was taken into custody by two other officers.

The footage shows the officer then returning the jet-ski to the family with a handshake and a thank you.

"Always good to have a little jet-ski on a Christmas morning," the officer appeared to say.

Investigations into the man's driving are continuing.
