Child accused of setting off bomb in shopping centre toilets

A child is accused of setting off a makeshift bomb in shopping centre toilets in Brisbane’s north.

A loud explosion in the toilets of a shopping centre on Barrett Street in Bracken Ridge was reported about 1.30pm on Sunday, December 28.

The explosion caused the fire sprinkler to activate.

Police found a small, improvised device that had been detonated and caused minor damage.

No one was physically injured.

A 12-year-old boy was taken into custody at a Bracken Ridge address about 5pm.

He was charged with one count each of entering premises with intent, damaging premises by explosion and stealing, relating to the items used to make the device.

He will appear in the Brisbane Childrens Court on January 9.

The incident was not terror-related and there was no ongoing risk to the public.
