Brisbane Riverwalk to reopen next month after three-year closure

An upgraded strip of the Riverwalk in Brisbane’s CBD will reopen next month.

The 256-metre section will link the waterfront path from Charlotte Street to Alice Street, creating a continuous route from the Story Bridge to the City Botanic Gardens.

The section has been fenced off since 2023 due to ongoing work at the multibillion-dollar Waterfront Brisbane site.

Developer Dexus confirmed an event was planned with Brisbane City Council to officially reopen the strip in the first half of February.

The company previously said the walk would reopen in January this year.

The passage has been completely rebuilt, with new concrete paths and steel banisters. A mural featuring sharks and a girl face the Kangaroo Point Bridge.

Waterfront Brisbane will eventually comprise two new office towers, shops, restaurants and public space.

Construction costs were estimated to total $2.5 billion, with completion expected in late 2028.

It was initially due to be opened in 2027, but the project was delayed last year due to construction “complexities” and bad weather.

The closure of the Riverwalk section for a private development prompted frustration from some pedestrian and cyclist groups.

“Dexus ... have really just thumbed their nose at people trying to walk or ride,” group Space for Cycling Brisbane said last year.

The Riverwalk will now link to the city-side entrance to the new Kangaroo Point Bridge, with the area becoming an increasingly busy hub.
