Man and woman killed by freight train at Sydney station

A man and woman have been hit and killed by a freight train in Sydney’s north overnight.

NSW Police on Friday said the woman in her 30s was on the tracks near the platform of Berowra train station when her companion, Berowra man Aroulen Chinnien, tried to help her.

Both were hit when a freight train came into the station just after midnight. Despite the efforts of paramedics, they died at the scene.

Investigators believe the deaths were a tragic accident, and are investigating whether the woman was on the tracks to retrieve something and Chinnien had been trying help her off.

Aged in his 20s, Chinnien lived with his parents less than two kilometres from the station.

A crime scene was established overnight, but has since been taken down. A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Train services were not affected on Friday morning.
