Two dead after falling from Sydney CBD overpass
Updated ,first published
Two people have died after falling from the Western Distributor overpass onto Harbour Street below in Sydney’s CBD.
The pair, a man and a woman who police believe to be in their 40s, died before the arrival of emergency services at about 9.45am on Saturday, police said.
Police have investigated the double fatality and established there were no suspicious circumstances, they said in a statement issued after 2pm. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Roads were reopened around 1pm on Saturday, after southbound lanes of traffic on the Sydney Harbour Bridge were closed and traffic was being diverted to the Anzac Bridge.
“Diversions have been lifted, however traffic remains heavy from Millers Point,” the Transport Management Centre said in a statement.
“Motorists should continue to allow extra travel time in the area while traffic conditions return to normal.”
Live Traffic had advised of changed traffic conditions due to a police operation on Harbour Street near the Western Distributor.
The location of the incident included overpasses and roads between the Harbour Bridge, the CBD and the Anzac Bridge, as well as the pedestrian overpass to the Pyrmont Bridge.
“Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command have established a crime scene and have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” a NSW Police spokesperson said on Saturday morning.
“Police are urging anyone with information about the matter – or was in the area at the time with any available dashcam/mobile phone footage – to contact Day Street Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
“No further details are available.”
