Thick fog and technical issue cause major delays at Sydney Airport

Hundreds of passengers were forced to line up in the cold outside Sydney Airport on Monday as thick fog caused delays.

The line for security snaked around the entrance to the airport as passengers were told to prepare for flight delays of up to 40 minutes. The lines lead into terminal 2 at the domestic airport.

Over the airport speakers, a spokesman was apologetic to customers in the line: “we appreciate this is not how you want to spend your Monday morning”.

A spokeswoman for Sydney Airport said there were delays of up to 40 minutes early on Monday due to the fog, which had cleared by mid-morning, but a technical issue had also hindered operations.

“We’re sorry about the queues and are working with airlines to get everyone on their way,” she said.

“Heavy fog affected flights earlier this morning, and a technical issue has meant we’re temporarily operating one less security lane than normal in T2 Domestic [Terminal].”

In a social media post, Qantas warned passengers to check their flights.

“Due to the fog in Sydney this morning, a number of flights have been delayed across the network,” the statement said.

The heavy fog also caused delays across Sydney’s ferry network on Monday morning, the F3 Parramatta River ferries particularly running late.
