Missing bushwalkers in Blue Mountains make contact with police

NSW Police have found two bushwalkers in the Blue Mountains who were reported missing after embarking on a two-day hike on Wednesday.

Alfred Zawadzki, 69, and Klaus Umland, 81, left Dunphys campground in the Megalong Valley on Wednesday and told a friend they would be back on Friday.

Police were notified when Zawadzki failed to keep an appointment on Sunday and a search of the two men was launched.

Police confirmed the bushwalkers contacted authorities late on Monday night via mobile phone. Authorities hoped to have more information later in the night.

An appeal was made to the public to report if they had seen either of the men. Police described Zawadzki as being of Caucasian appearance, about 180cm tall, with a medium build and grey hair. Umland was described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 170cm tall with grey hair.

The search for the pair was suspended late on Sunday but resumed at 7am on Monday. Police said in a statement the men were regular and experienced bushwalkers and it was believed their planned route would have been within their capabilities.

Umland’s car has been found in the car park of Dunphys campground.

A statement from Blue Mountains Police Area Command said specialist bush search teams from the NSW SES came in to assist.

“Blue Mountains Police [wish] to acknowledge the assistance from our volunteer agencies who give so much time, experience and skill in these demanding situations,” they said.
