Man dies after being pulled from popular Sydney Harbour pool

A man has died at a popular Sydney Harbour swimming site after being pulled unresponsive from the water.

Emergency services were called to the Murray Rose Pool at Redleaf Beach in Double Bay about 2.30pm on Thursday. Paramedics treated the man for about 50 minutes before he was declared dead at the scene.

A crime scene has been established as police investigate the incident. It is not yet clear if the man drowned or suffered a medical episode, with a final determination to be made by the coroner.

A man in his 70s died at the same beach in September 2020. A woman in her 60s died in hospital after suffering a medical episode swimming there in July 2021.

The popular pool is a harbourside tidal enclosure. It was renamed from Redleaf Pool to honour six-time Olympic medallist swimmer Murray Rose after his death in 2012.

The man’s death comes as Sydney braces for severe heatwave conditions developing into the weekend.
