A summary of the day

By Josh Dye

That's all we've got for today, thanks for reading our live coverage. Here's a summary of the major headlines:

  • Tens of thousands of Sydneysiders have been ordered or warned to evacuate because of rising floodwaters in swollen rivers. And that's before the "rain bomb" from the east coast low properly hits – that's due between 2am and 11am tomorrow. The Hawkesbury, Nepean and Georges Rivers are all either at or approaching major flood levels as the sodden ground can't absorb any more moisture. Residents who suffered through last year's floods have been told to "get out now" in anticipation of worsening conditions.
  • The NSW government is using this flooding in Sydney to argue in favour of raising the Warragamba Dam wall – a controversial $1.6 billion project that has huge environmental opposition. Since it began spilling today, the dam has discharged 600 gigalitres of water, more than the 460 gigalitres during last March's mega-floods.
  • In the Northern Rivers region, tens of thousands of people remain homeless and there's a critical shortage of food, water and fuel. As floodwaters slowly recede and the full toll of the disaster is revealed, people are returning to pick up the pieces. Four people have died and authorities fear that number will rise. Many people in Lismore, Ballina and smaller towns beyond that remain without drinking water and sewage services, and there are widespread outages of payment systems. Helicopter drops and SES flood boats ferrying supplies have been stepped up to meet the growing unmet demand for essential items.
  • In Queensland, where people are mopping up after catastrophic flooding earlier this week, storm bands causing large hail, damaging winds and heavy rainfall are forecast to hit the south-east on Thursday, threatening already devastated towns and potentially delaying the clean-up.
  • And on a positive note, here are some of the ways you can help flood-affected communities in NSW and Queensland.

If you're a night owl, you can keep an eye on the weather radar as the heavy rain approaches. For the rest of you, goodnight. Stay safe everyone.

What if you’re isolating with COVID-19 and need to evacuate?

By Jenny Noyes

NSW Health has tonight issued some important advice to people who are isolating because of COVID-19 but now need to evacuate their homes amid the threat of rising floodwaters.

It boils down to this: “If you are told to evacuate, you must evacuate”.

That’s NSW Acting Chief Health Officer Dr Marianne Gale. Her advice comes as several Sydney suburbs were issued orders to evacuate by 3am.

“Under no circumstances should you remain in self-isolation at your residence – your safety is our highest concern and an emergency evacuation is a valid reason to leave your home.”

‘Many hands make light work’: Grafton residents begin cleanup

By Laura Chung

Aaron Hartmann and his daughter Sunny have brought their boat down to their Grafton street, which is now covered with water.

Nearby paddocks and fences now lie beneath metres of brown water. They’re going to return Aaron's grandfather Andrew back home – a journey which would be impossible without their boat.

Andrew only returned to town today to give the army milk supplies which will then be distributed to communities in need. Now he’s back home, he’s got the mammoth task of cleaning up his property which has mostly escaped the flood.

Despite the work ahead of him, which will include fixing the road, removing dozens of branches and watermelons that have washed up, he’ll get a working bee going with his sons.

SES warns storm damage expected along South Coast

The South Coast SES is warning that major storm damage is expected along with minor flooding when the east coast low hits the region tomorrow morning.

Adam Carney, Shoalhaven local commander said Sussex Inlet is a key area of concern with a minor to moderate flood warning current for the St George’s Basin area.

The Shoalhaven River is also a focus point, particularly with the high tide at 10.40am tomorrow. It is also currently at minor to moderate flood warning, with minor flooding expected at Nowra and Terara tomorrow and further rises possible as rainfall continues.

Earlier today, Shoalhaven Heads was mechanically opened to the ocean to prepare for the incoming deluge. Local state MP Gareth Ward urged residents to stay off the road if they didn’t need to be out: “we’re going to see more water than we’ve ever seen,” he said.

Major flood warning for Georges River; Hawkesbury-Nepean peaks to exceed 2021 levels

By Josh Dye

The Bureau of Meteorology is now warning the Hawkesbury and Nepean rivers will be higher than the floods in March 2021, and major flooding is likely on the Georges River.

That's an escalation from earlier today when the Hawkesbury-Nepean flood peaks were predicted to be similar to 2021.

Major flooding is occurring on the Nepean River at Menangle Bridge, where the river is at 15.66 metres. The bureau tips that could reach 16 metres by 9pm.

An attempted cow rescue on what was once a Northern Rivers road

By Laura Chung

Many roads around the Northern Rivers region remain impassable, with large amounts of floodwater high enough to cover speed signs.

For Scott Kroehnert, that means firing up a boat to make the 20-minute trip home, bringing alcohol and groceries to his property where he remains cut off by floodwaters with neighbours.

Just as he was about to set off, someone called to report a cow trapped in some tree branches. Mr Kroehnert and other local residents tried to save the cow, but it died as it was being brought to shore.

“It’s only [got] two teeth, he’s only young,” one of the farmers says.
